According to at least 2 sources (cited here), Sergei was guaranteed 7 million and was the A-side in the negotiations for the first fight.

If true, this puts Ward's statements about a rematch in proper context.

coWard got humiliated, ALL MAJOR media sites had Kovalev winning (including ESPN - which still ranks him higher since it was a robbery - only 6 online trolls believe Ward won), so Drea will have to take whatever he is given. Otherwise his legacy is stained forever as a D level fighter.

Those look like some bs ass websites so idk if I'm buying it. This fight had as much if not less appeal to the casuals than Crawford vs Postol & I think those guys split $3.5M or something like that. No way did Ward & Kovalev chop up $12M on this 250kish/max PPV caliber fight. Maybe there was upside to $7M if it did well on PPV, but I'd be super surprised if anyone was willing to throw $7M to Kovalev. Hell I don't think anyone except Roc Nation would throw Ward $5M for this fight.

If this is true then I don't feel so bad for Kovalev. I mean, after all he made a lot of money. And will make in the rematch some good money too.
