This was the first card I ever attended and as a long time boxing fan I may never attend another. This fight is why MMA is gaining so much ground on boxing.

The fight was close but Ward didnt do enough to beat the champ. There were plenty of later rounds where Ward was backed up, out landed and out worked, but the crowd would go nuts of a simple jab and the judges looked for any excuse to give it to Ward. Perfect example....the Hooker fight in the co main event. Those same fans who said Ward didnt do enough said Hooker lost a wide dec....and what happened? He was protected.
I can respect your opinion because I could see why people pick the fight for Kovalev it really was a close fight I agree. MMA is gaining ground because boxing rarely gives us the fights we want when MMA put on that great card on November 12th. The Hooker fight was a robbery he got his ass whipped in that fight for sure.

Ward vs Kovalev was much closer and could have gone either way.

wasn't that the story heading into that fight ?

      my how things change
Well all the Ward fans around me got in for free so that tells me they were brought in. I sat in 300 hundred dollar seats and only payed 100 for my ticket. Think of how sad that is, all the fans around me got all those 300 dollar tickets for free....how is Ward really a draw if so many tickets are given away and fans are bused in to fill the place. Kov had a good share scattered around the arena but majority was up in the nose bleeds.

excellent way for Ward to raise his profile

if Kovalev had gotten the nod in that fight, a lot of fans/insiders would be questioning the decision

they would point out that Kovalev had Ward hurt and yet failed to finish him off..... they would point out that Kovalev did little to stem the tide when it became obvious that Ward was climbing back into the fight..... they would ask what happened to Kovalev down the stretch, and why he was absent during the championship rounds

personally I think that Ward was fortunate to get the nod in a fight that close..... the best result would have been a draw, so that the big fella could keep his titles and Ward could remain undefeated, and we would still get a rematch.....

..... but, that didn't happen, at least we still get the rematch

How can you have a draw when Ward got knocked down? 10-8 throws it off. Plus Kov outlanded and out worked Ward in some later rounds. At worst it was 114-113 Kovalev. Most boxing analysis still score it that way after the replay was shown. Plain and simple Ward got a gift, its the way it is. The rematch might be joke, Ward already is claiming everything is on his terms. Kov will need a ko worse in the second fight to get a win. He will never get a dec.

I did not have a draw, I had Ward winning the fight..... I said that the best result would have been a draw because the fight was so close..... that way the big fella could keep his titles, Ward could remain undefeated, and we would still get to see a rematch.....

anyway, conducting a post mortem is pointless, when a rematch is scheduled next

Ward wasnt hurt on the knockdown. Kov caught him coming in but it was not a clean shot. If it were it may have been a different result, buts thats irrelevant. Anyway Kov didnt fade like so many think, the rds were close and Ward was outlanded in some of those later rights. Like I said, I was at this fight. The crowd reacted with a Ward jab, even when he missed his follow up or hit gloves, the people thought a ko was coming. The decision was influenced by the reaction of the crowd. I agree it was close but no way did Ward do enough to beat the champ and take the titles.
