Chuvalo has had a rough life, rougher than most of us can even imagine. As well as his granite chin stood up to the many devastating punchers he encountered in his boxing career, his heart and decency withstood the most trying of times outside of the ropes. Chuvalo is an all time great human being.

That's a beautiful post Kid. I think it's time to recognize some of these boxers as human beings outside the rings. Patterson, Chuvalo, Corbett etc. All GREAT people, which is even more important then what they accomplished inside the ring.

Kid, I also had a chance to meet Chuvalo at the Juno's here in Canada. He was one of the nicest, most welcoming human beings I have ever met.

yeah, he may have been called "gentleman" jim, but he definetely was not nice.

oh yeah, and georeg chuvalo was a good fighter. not a great fighter, but a good one. he could take a punch better than anyone who ever fought. he's a kind of person that would be an inspiration to alot of people on how to overcome life's struggles.

He wasn't a great fighter, TRUE. BUT, I truly believe he would of been champ in ANY other era. He fought in the greatest era for HW boxing of ALL TIME.

I don't think he was nearly as big of racist as some of the other fighters during that time (particularily Sullivan), but I REALLY wished he hadn't given Peter Jackson such a run around when the deserving Jackson challenged him for the title.

And yeah, Corbett wasn't exactly a "gentleman" in the ring either...especially if you were to read about the fight with Fitzsimmons when Corbett reportedly spat directly in Fitz' face during a couple of clinches, attacked Fitz after the fight was over during the post fight celebration, and then soon after threatening to attack Fitz in the street if he ever saw him out and about.

yeah, and also that bigoted piece of **** corbett was one of james jeffries cornermen in the johnson-jeffries fight, and during the fight, corbett was yelling racial slurs at johnson. and everytime corbett said something nasty, johnson would retaliate by hitting jeffries, lol! and then johnson would lightly threaten corbett saying, "you want some of this? i'll take you on next if you want", lol! he should have. after he licked jeffries, he should have went up to corbett and beat the **** out of him, lol!
