For me, boxing is all about wearing gloves although I know gloved boxing evolved from bare-fist brawling. The Queenberry rules changed brawling from savage encounters to regulated "fair-play" contests - so naturally those who participated were considered more gentlemanly than those who fought under other rules or no rules.
One would assume as much, but these "gentleman" were usually dock or construction workers gathered in groups, illegally betting on brutal fighting matches. Even after being regulated, the background and motivation of the fighters didn't change for a long time and to this day boxing is still a brutal game were the winner takes the majority of the spoils.

I think you have boxing honestly confused with Soccer. Soccer is said to be a Gentleman's game played by hooligans and that Rugby is a hooligans game played by Gentlemen.

I suppose the biggest proof to the contrary would be James John "Gentleman Jim" Corbett who dethroned John. L . Sullivan. Corbett was distinguished from others boxers by his gentleman persona which would suggest the average boxer's persona to be very contrary to this.
