That's an absolute misconception based on nothing. Where in the rules of boxing does it state the a challenger has to "take" the belts from the champion? Whether you think Ward won or not this comment makes no sense - if Ward fought 12 rounds going backwards landing only jabs and minimized Kovalev's offense he'd still deserve to be champion.

It's a common agreed point in elite pro boxing, not a misconception.

Ward didn't win it, not fighting backwards, not in anyway.

if that comment is true..... then Kovalev totally blew that fight

if Kovalev could not KRUSH pitty-pats, then HE FAILED

he missed a ton of punches, especially down the stretch

and Ward's jab disrupted him big time, that was a thing of beauty..... Kovalev never adjusted to Ward's jab..... ALL the casuals said that Ward will not be able to keep Kovalev off him..... truth is, Ward kept Kovalev honest with his jab/movement, backed up with that hook/bodywork

Yeah man, that's how I feel about it. If a round is close (like rounds 10 and 12 were), they should go to the champ. Kovalev should have won a UD by at least a point or two.

It was a great fight to watch, but that decision should have gone to Kovalev. Forget SOG's zero

Even if you stretch this one pretty far, Kov still should rightfully have taken it 114-113 and certainly it shouldn't have been vice versa in Ward's favor.

no one is ignoring it but the rules do say clean punching and a lot of his body work was landing low or to the back etc..kov was doing clean punching throughout the fight and more of it hence why he won.

Some people are trying very hard to rationalize and justify it, but the honest truth is that Sergey Kovalev was robbed of a deserved win.

I mentioned here who I was rotting for couple of weeks ago (Ward) in my mind I thought no way kovalev beats Wards strengths and ring IQ, but I have to admit Kovalev out box the boxer, out smart the ring IQ "MASTER", and out hussle one of the roughest SOBs in the sport.....I had Kovalev by 4 or 5 rounds.

The same people who ignored Maidana 1000+ punch output and loads of body and head work against Floyd are the same people bragging about Ward who only threw 300 punches and sparsely landing shots throughout the round you do see why I detest the bullshiet going on?

Kovalev fought the better fight nothing will ever take that away even without the KD he still should have won and won fairly comfortably, the result stinks and just goes on what I said weeks and week ago they will rob Kovalev If it goes to decision no matter what he does Kovalev needs a knockout and how true was I and many others.
