It's still tough for me. I don't know if I'll ever get over this, I'm really having trouble moving past this "loss." What went wrong? I know what went wrong, Kovalev and JDJ's naive-ness, why WHY WHY did they just assume that these corrupt Vegas judges will give them rounds they should of won, with no knockdowns or brutality in those rounds? Why did they think they they had the RIGHT, the AUDACITY to outbox Andre Ward successfully- but feel like they'd get the points on the cards? I would literally do anything to go back in time and just whisper in JDJs ear before the fight "they don't like you here- and you will NOT get credit for anything short of murder."
It's like, yeah, there's a rematch coming. And it'll be bigger and better and Kovalev would get even more exposure/credit for knocking Ward out (which I have no doubts he will), but how long do I have to wait? It's one thing if Kovalev got completely outboxed for 12 rounds and Andre put on a clinic- I would give him all the props in the world and just pray Kovalev gets better going into the next fight. But that's not what happened. At best, Ward arguably "kept it close," and Kovalev still won the fight by more, cleaner, harder punches and better and more efficient boxing from range....
Yet now I have to see this "1" on Kovalevs record for God knows how long, as if it wasn't bad enough that that mother ****er Grover Young dived when he was getting KO'd by Kovalev and pretended he got hit with an illegal punch (he didn't) and robbed Kovalev of another "0," which is the draw that currently sits on his record. Every ****ing day I'm going to wake up and drink my coffee and browse boxing stuff, and every day that "1" will still be there and there's absolutely nothing I can do about it. I know this sounds pathetic, but I feel hopeless and helpless. During this time, I'm going to inevitably going to come across trolls on here talking about how Ward should of won 8-4, dominated, etc, and I'm gonna have to bite my tongue because there's nothing I can do.
Sure, I can say "Kovalev will beat Ward comfortably in the rematch" for months, just like how I was saying going into this fight. But none of that will matter until the fight actually gets here. So, we're talking months, months of this crap.
This will sound even more pathetic but for the last two nights, I literally laid down in my bed in the dark around 1AM when I normally go to sleep and I just laid in the dark. Lol. I couldn't sleep because I kept running the scenario in my head over and over and over again. Everything, from the opening bell to the '114-113' I heard and actually when I heard that live, I INSTANTLY knew that Kovalev got shafted. Seeing Andre Ward get up on the ropes and scream... man, that should of been my boy. That should of been Kovalev. I have so much invested in him.
I've been deceived, tricked, and straight up lied to by Kathy the ***** Duva. This old ***** couldn't ****ing talk to the commission before the fight and make SURE that no funny **** will go on by the judges, because God knows that Russian fighters get shafted in Vegas (Novikov, Khabib), and she should of done her homework. It was her job to know that and her job to make sure everything is gonna go down fairly. It was her job to tell the judges "Hey, I know how you guys like to do things here- but my fighter probably won't go for the KO, so forget all the billing about 'puncher vs. boxer,' you're going to probably see him put on a boxing clinic, so prepare for that so you can score it accordingly."
But she didn't do that. Instead, these 3 judges went into the fight like some damn amateurs, thinking, "well Kovalev is the knock out king. So, if Ward isn't knocked out- I mean surely, the brawler won't outbox the boxer, right? So if there's any doubt and there's some swing rounds, and Ward is still standing, we'll go with Ward."
So, that happened, and it played out just like that, and Duva, without even knowing her own fighter, let it happen. We've SEEN Kovalev implement the SAME strategy as he did Saturday night, the strategy to "go rounds," and she should of been aware of that, and she had the whole damn week to let these judges know what to look for. Instead, she kept giving ****ing interviews where she was calling Kovalev this huge punching machine that never lets anybody get off the hook easy, it's knockout or bust, etc. Her lack of influencing the judges- well, influenced the judges. If that makes sense. Because they don't give a **** about Kovalev (nor Ward) and it's not their jobs to research tendencies of fighters. So, the fight came and they saw Ward surviving and not flailing on the floor, and they gave all the swing rounds to Ward because of that.
I've invested so much into Kovalev, time wise, money wise, a lot of resources, etc. I've traveled three times to watch him fight live. One of the times I roomed with somebody from Craiglist for the weekend and it was the worst experience of my live. But I did it. I've gotten autographed gloves, shirts, etc, and I literally waited for Saturday night, waited for the clinic I expected Kovalev to put on so that the stock in all of those items could rise and I felt certain that in 5 years all of those items would be worth some serious money to collectors. And now what? Who the **** is going to pay for an autographed glove of a guy with not only a loss, but a ****ing draw on his record too?
I've followed Kovalev heavily since 2012, I predicted he will be the GOAT LHW, and Ward, Adonis, etc, were all stepping stones to the final place in boxing history where I thought Kovalev would be. And I stick to that, it'll happen, but what kills me is that now he has an official "1" in the loss column, and I have to wait at least half a year for Kovalev to "officially" redeem himself to the general public/casuals. It's gonna be tough as hell, but it is what it is.
I just wanted to share this because I skipped all of my classes today and I'll probably call out of work tonight because I really don't want to hear **** from anybody, if they mention Kovalev or Ward, I'd flip **** and I'm not trying to deal with them.
Cong**** to Ward for stepping up and taking this fight and giving Sergey an opportunity at this legacy fight. I don't feel you won, as a matter of fact, I know you didn't win, and Kovalev would of gotten that fight anywhere else in the world, hell anywhere else in the United States. But you still deserve major props, respect and credit. Really
