Why was he keep on winding that bolo punch with his hands down and keeps on getting clipped with hard right hands and stiff left jabs because of that?! Was he trying to emulate the Roberto-Leonard moment, because he certainly kept on failing!

Watch the rounds in the middle rounds and see How Ward got clipped with a left jab after winding that right hand for a bolo punch, and then next time both Kovalev and Ward was winding for a bolo punch and Kovalev landed instead of Ward, but WTF Ward? Then He winds up again in the next round for a bolo punch, got clipped with a jab, then winds the bolo punch the next moment What the heck was Ward doing?

Two reasons. Main one is trying to create the perception that he was in complete control, and that the fight was going exactly how he wanted it to go. It's the same reason fighters do the head shake, even when it's obvious they had been hit. Second reason is trying to goad the opponent.

I thought it cost him the fight watching it live. He needed every round he could get and got caught with one of the cleaner punches during that round doing some bull****. ****** decision considering these rounds were decided by a jab in many cases.
