  • Gutknecht rushed to hospital after Groves fight, had to be resuscitated

Boxing began fearing another tragedy as George Groves’ badly beaten opponent collapsed in the Wembley Arena dressing room and was carried to an ambulance on a stretcher.

Germany’s Eduard Gutknecht is believed to have needed resuscitating in the ambulance before he could be taken to the neurological unit at St Mary’s Hospital in west London.

There were reports that the 29-year-old Gutknecht briefly stopped breathing and was drifting in and out of consciousness.

Very sad news, hope he makes a full recovery.

    EDIT:

George Groves’ opponent Eduard Gutknecht has undergone surgery after falling ill after their fight on Friday night.

Groves beat the 34-year-old super-middleweight by unanimous decision at Wembley’s SSE Arena, following which Gutknecht was taken to hospital.

Gutknecht is sedated and will continue to be monitored in the coming days, according to the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC).

Wow, that sucks. I hope the guy pulls through and everything ends up on the up and up.

Mother****er I ****ing knew it. The guy barely threw a punch from round 9 on, he should have been pulled out. I could see the distress signals from my damn living room. The ref had more than one opportunity to pull him out in the 10th and 11th.

In the 12th he nearly went down twice from jabs, for **** sake!

When a guy is throwing that less and the body language is that bad, he should be pulled out period.

Those last 4 rounds, he wasn't in the fight at all, the eye is closed, he kept rubbing it, obvious he has some kind of serious damage there. Unnecessary punishment he took, he couldn't defend himself at all, couldn't see, was getting hit with everything Groves threw.

Sad to hear. He really faded at the end there but Groves wasn't doing enough to say there was a clear point that the ref should have intervened. I wonder if Eduard's corner should have been more involved, or if he was still in it, mentally.

Haven't seen the fight I was busy watching the Ward vs Kovalev weigh in with my popcorn.

Was it not even remotely competitive, what were Groves power shots like ?

Yep I blame the corner. If the ref would've stopped the fight based off of feelings people would be saying it's fixed. It's up to his corner to stop the fight in those type of situations

Exactly. George was still missing punches, even when he had the guy standing still. It never looked like it should have been stopped and the main concern was the cut. Eduard was still moving and circling so it looked as if he still had his sense about him.

A corner knows their man well though and they should be able to tell when something isn't right.

Hard to say on this one as some guys do act normal, then drop dead an hour after a sporting event.
