  • Why are boxing promoters so averse to actually promoting?

It's ****ing embarrassing how utterly inept and lazy these promoters are. You've got the single most significant and compelling matchup in boxing in god knows how many years taking place tomorrow night, the winner of whom should be catapulted to superstardom, yet it barely even feels like a regular fight week.

This is as big a problem in boxing as the best matchups not happening on a regular basis and why boxing is failing to capture a younger audience: lack of marketing and hype. Promoters who are content to sit on their fat arse and twiddle their thumbs rather than actually trying to do their jobs .

I agree...the promotion for this mega fight is atrocious...promoters only go after fighters with a national following behind them...if you don't have a big ethnic or national following you are not going to be easy to promote unless you do it the Jack Johnson, Muhammad Ali and Floyd Mayweather, Jr way...

Because promoting costs money and this fight won't appeal to casuals no matter how heavy they promote it. So instead, they go cheap on the promotion side in hopes to earn a profit.

Promoters should start investing in more public appearances and outings for lesser known great fighters...do more celebrity type shit to get known...movies...etc...then parlay that back to the ring...like some boxers need to go to "personality school"...

It'd cost nothing for Jay Z to give a single mention to the fight on one of his social media accounts. It's his company involved in promoting this, ffs.

And making a profit is difficult when your audience is so small. This fight will flop massively on ppv, primarily because few know that it's happening.

Certain promotions have the connections that others don't. Arum been a promoter so long, he knows who to contact to get Pacquiao on ESPN and Fox Sports to sell his up and coming fight. This fight unfortunately with Duva as the lead promoter I don't think Mainevents have those type connections unfortunately so the Promotion has been very Low Budget.

People spent this entire week talking about Mayweather vs McGregor in the Mainstream Sports Media and haven't even mentioned this fight yet. Kellerman works on ESPN Firsttake and they haven't discussed this fight hopefully they did today.

He is not the lead promoter, Duva is that is likely why you haven't heard anything, he will likely attend though

Boxing promoters have been spoiled with tv money from HBO/Showtime along with casino site money. They no longer had to work to sell their shows, they got their money up front. Gary Shaw was the prime example. If he couldn't get a tv date or a casino deal, his fighters didn't fight. That's not a promoter, that's a parasite.

Look at guys who do little shows off-tv at break even or a loss, those are the real promoters. DiBella, Russell Peltz, even Top Rank commits to little shows, and now so has GB.

I think boxing promotion is going through a transition at the moment, and there are a lot who are still stuck with the old way of doing things.

Personally the only one I see EVOLVING is Eddie Hearn, he is going with the times - hitting social media, his interviews with Kugan on IFL TV get HUGE hits, and they are almost always a good watch, he has this open book policy with his fighters so they are apart of the business side of the show. Hearn doesn't rest on his laurels with the Sky contract, he still puts in the extra yards on appearances, social media etc. Most importantly he is evolving with the times.

I think some of these promoters need to think outside the box a bit more, don't get me wrong its probably harder than it looks from the outside and they are all still very intelligent people, but the way they are trying to reach people is the main problem I see at the moment.

Bob Arum for example thinks Billboards and cardboard cutouts of the fighters in the hotel is still relevant...Come on! They need to gather peoples information, get them through social media, and digital advertising. Boxing promotion like a lot of things to do with boxing is in the stone age.
