Smack talk became a part of professional sports -- not just boxing -- long before the 90s. It has been known, from time to time, to get boxers the fights they want. If nothing else, it helps keeps them in limelight.

maybe wilder never talked trash about Ortiz cause then there would be a demand for the fight which wilder would not want. anyway it is good to come here and not read 3 posts a day where wilder has made a fool of himself with his mouth
