  • Comments Thread For: Danny Garcia: The Perception of Control

By Cliff Rold - To a certain segment of the fan base, the perception of control is everything. This has been a regularly disappointing year in boxing. Several big fights have fallen through or been delayed (with no guarantee they ever happen). The Heavyweight Champion of the World couldn't hold himself together long enough to make a single title defense...

Why they hating?!!! this fight with Vargas is not even a defense of the WBC welterweight title and in reality DSG deserves so much more respect because he is going from winning a world title at a higher weight into a unification vs. the #2. guy in the division! Danny is underappreciated this makes me mad! Respect da ChAMP!!! how many times did Kell Brook defend his **** title? how many times did 'Runtime' defend his? did they ever unify the IBF and WBA? the answer NO!

We're going to have to disagree on the Guerrero fight. That Robert did so well doesn't make him more credible, it just spoke worse of Garcia.

You're not wrong that this is a boxing problem and not a Garcia problem, and that the one-time potential of Garcia is a big part of the anger towards him. After the Lucas win, he was on the cusp of real stardom. His career since has been such a disappointment. He has two legit fights since. One most boxing fans and journalists think he lost, and the other had no one really walking away thinking of him as the better guy, even if Garcia had a better case for winning. Add in that he's part of a division full of young talent which makes fights since Peterson look even worse.

I do place a lot more personal responsibility on fighters than other fans do. As far as I'm concerned, a fighter always holds a good deal of power and control about making fights. You can insist on fights fans want to see. We've seen it happen. And Angel Garcia's comments about Thurman-Porter suggest that he and Danny have little interest in challenging fights. He will only take them now when backed into a corner. If he beats Thurman, I expect him to go back to another 2-3 years fighting disappointing fights. That is the mindset they show me regarding Danny's career.

I agree, he's been out of the ring for a minute. Let him knock the rust off. He needs to at his best when he face Thurman.

I know DSG has a big fight for March, but I wish he was fighting Terence Crawford tonight!

My thoughts exactly. Garcia's career has taken a downturn since Matthyse. Rold didn't mention that since Lucas he has also fought Salko and Malignaggi. I am with you on Guerrero. Guerrero is on a medium to steep decline and is battle worn. Fighting Garcia was like his last great stand as subsequent fights have shown so him looking good is definitely a negative for Garcia.

The thing with Garcia is this >> he is not a great boxer, just good. At JWW he was a big puncher, at WW he isn't. At WW he would be bullied by Brook, Porter and Spence and possibly by Thurman. If he fought Crawford now at a catch weight he would get out-boxed silly as Garcia doesn't even have length like Postol.

Un-biased fans can see all this. I do have to give him kudos for taking Thurman. Just that kind of makes up for much else that has gone on for the last three years. But do we as boxing fans really have to wait 2-3 years for specific boxers to make a big fight? SMH.
