Canelo has never fought at 160. People say he had the belt and gave up his title, but how did he get that title. Canelo won that title fighting Cotto. Cotto is not a middleweight. And in the fight Canelo won the belt, they fought at a 155 pound catch weight. He didn't fight Cotto because he he was chasing a middleweight belt. He fought Cotto because it was a huge fight that could mad and because there was an agreed catch weight. If GGG offered to fight Canelo at a 155 pound catch weight and Canelo refused then I would say he ducked. He would be ducking because he fought Cotto with those same conditions that refused to fight GGG with. You not a duck in my eyes for refusing to fight at a weight you never fought at.
When Canelo fought Mayweather, Mayweather had the junior middleweight title (that he won from Cotto) but Floyd still fought him at a catch weight and not the 154 pound limit. It was understandable for Mayweather to fight at 152 pounds because he's not truly a junior middleweight. He won that belt from a guy that was a former 147 pounder. He didn't win it from a big 154 pounder. What did Canelo do, he agreed to the catch weight because it was a big fight.
Canelo didn't duck GGG and Golovkin didn't duck Canelo. It is understandable for Canelo to want to fight at a catch weight because he is not a middleweight, won the title at a catch weight against a former welterweight, and because he never refused to fight GGG at 155.
GGG didn't duck Canelo because he is a middleweight and that is his best weight/weight he is most comfortable with. Just like you can't say Canelo is a duck for not fighting at a weight he's never fought at, you can't expect GGG to fight at a weight that he doesn't currently fight at and would be difficult for him to make.
Now do I personally think that GGG should've at least entertained a catch weight, like fighting at a weight like 156 or 157? Yes because it is a big fight, Canelo is the bigger star, and the bigger guy normally agrees to fight at a catch weight for those type of opportunities. Is he a duck for refusing? No!! He's not a duck to refuse to fight at a weight he's not comfortable with. Canelo agreed to a catch weight even though the junior middleweight belt was on the line and agreed to at 152 pounds instead of the 154 pound limit. He did it because he was the bigger guy, Mayweather was the more known/accomplished fighter, and it was a huge fight and payday. But even though Canelo agreed to those terms, he lost that fight though and has said he regretted cutting to that weight. It is perfectly reasonable for Golovkin to fear a weight cut and not want to do it. Canelo himself has confirmed the validity of Golovkin's fear and hesitancy in agreeing to a catch weight with his own words after the Mayweather fight (even though I think Canelo was making excuses). Canelo should be the last person to call somebody out for not want to cut more weight after his own experience.
