Lol yea.. But if anyone is drunk it has to be Merchant. He be making me laugh. But them both together are good commentators. So is Teddy Atlas and Joey Tesitor.
I like them more then the HBO crew. I cant really blame Lampley for being biased, becuase hes being paid by HBO and HBO endorses fighters, its almost part of his job.
Larry is just drunk though.
I used to be contemptuous of Lampley but recently I've changed my mind. He clearly has become a serious boxing fan, does his homework and even if he was never associated with the sport in his youth, has done his best to honor boxing since he became a commentator. I'm still a little uneasy with his efforts to demonstrate real boxing savvy, but that's asking a bit too much from sort of a "pretty boy" commentator.
Larry Merchant doesn't seem to really understand the details of what goes on inside the ring. Rather, he focuses on nebulous issues outside the ring. He's sort of a self-styled boxing philosopher, but not a really a profound one. He doesn't really bother me much, but I prefer a true boxing analyst like Al Bernstein, Teddy Atlas or Sean O'Grady. Heck, Howard Cosell was better than Merchant and he wasn't anywhere close to being an athlete.
just look at the BAD from4/29 team they suck real bad Jim Larry can turn a bad fight into something watchable not many sports boardcaster can do that they are the best in boxing.
Lamps and Merchant are synonomous with boxing, the sport I love. They are an extension of what is great about the sport, because they both love it. Lampley brings a different level of excitement to it.
These threads really annoy the **** out of me. Seriously, nobody despised Harold Lederman more than I did. I really hated him, of course it had alot to do with the combination of his annoying voice combined with the way he wouldn't shut the **** up when Hopkins fought Taylor the first time, but yeah. I recently watched a Boxingscene interview with him in it and after hearing his thoughts on the game, I respected him and threw all the other bull**** out the window. I respect people who like or love the sport I love, and respect them even more when they pop off boxing history and speak on which fighters they like and why. Two things Lederman did in that interview.
Lampley may be a little too hollywood, but you should understand that while I'm not really sure whether or not he's as big of a fan as some of the other commentators, I guarantee you respects those guys and Lampley has seen many, many bouts, so I'm sure he knows more about the sport than many of us here.
Just cuz a dude looks like a punk and talks like a punk doesn't mean he's a punk. Sure Lampley is annoying sometimes, but after hearing him talk about seeing fights such as Qawi vs Holyfield, and talking about how majestic it was when Foreman walked through Holyfield's 18 punch combo, ****, I respect Lampley.
If you want to hang a commentator out on his **** then pick Jim Grey. That ******* makes fighters look bad at every chance he gets just because he's jealous he's the ***** with the mic and they're the one with the glory.
They are not perfect but I love that Merchant will ask the tough question to the persons face and it's usually the question the public wants to know. And I've noticed that even with the flaws and Merchants drunk behavior they definitely bring a liveliness and excitement to the bout. It's like you can complain but when you watch boxing without them it's not the same. I used to think that Merchant was borderline racist or had an agenda when I was younger, but realized that Merachant has no agenda just doesn't even realize how he comes off sometimes. So there is no malice or rude intent so he's fine.
