Comments Thread For: For Better or For Worse, Heavyweight Glory Still Runs Through Klitschko

For years, Wladimir Klitschko ruled the heavyweight division with an iron fist.

To this day, he still holds the weight class hostage not through his actions in the ring, but through a sense of entitlement that he's earned, but which hasn't done any good lately for a sport in dire need of a happy ending these days.

He ruled boxing for 10 years straight, just retire

HW needs some chaos not back to the old routine

I also wonder if Fury would make a "miraculous recovery" -- he's been pretty clear about not being motivated for that rematch

I see your point about wanting some new blood after the same routine for so long but the fact that he ruled for so long gives him the right to fight on. Unfortunately, the fights may not be particularly exciting but he won't be around past 2 more fights.

As far as your Tyson Fury point, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he suddenly became interested in jumping back in the mix. Not having to fight Wladimir again might galvanize him to sober up and get back to business.

I agree. And, people that say "just quit" are lacking perspective. He's a long-time champ who lost in a bizarre way to a guy who didn't punch him. A guy who couldn't even rematch because he was a drug addict. Wlad is still in incredible shape. He's got to want to prove to himself that his mind is still strong. That he won't be remembered as a guy who mental folded. I'm sure that fighting again is of great personal significance to him. This isn't an "I'm getting beat up, I'd better quit" sort of thing.

Fury was the nail in the coffin of wlad

Made it look easy against a scared old man

Wlad has very little fight left in him otherwise he would have taken on a green 17 fight Joshua

I don't buy that. If Klitschko is top of the heap then sum yung guy needs to knock him off. There's Joshua, Parker, Ortiz, (Hughie) Fury and a bunch of other up-and-coming guys. You want to "be the man" then you have to "beat the man."

Why do you think Klitschko will be done in 2 fights? From what I've read, he seams to be intent on fighting for a couple more years.

Give it up wlad, the shows over, you almost killed heavyweight boxing, there is no place for your jab jab grab routine in the modern heavyweight landscape. Noones interested. Youll forever be remember as one of the most boring champions that ever existed, wont be remembered fondly outside of germany/ukraine thats for sure

He may be intent on sticking around for a few more years but his age coupled with the ridiculous amount of time it takes to negotiate and set up a fight makes me think that it won't be too much longer. Also, he has to win in order to make it worth his while to stick around and that isn't necessarily a guarantee. Cheers.

Great Article...I am a big klitschko fan because between Vitali and Wlad they had a stranglehold on the HeavyWeight division...(Vitali started and Wlad finished it)Wlads knock out to fight ratio is Great....it was even rumoured that Don King wanted a Wlad vs Vitali fight...the kicker to all this is that Wlad mentally destroyed fury so to fury the song "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" by The Rolling Stones is fitting.
