Andre Ward vs Sergey Kovalev: A Tale of Boxers and Punchers

In boxing, history comes in clashes, where style differentiates and fans argue on who wins against who in head to head challenges. And in the most anticipated clashes in boxing history is where when two different people clash with two different styles.

The eternal debate between a boxer against a puncher is always a hot topic in the history of the boxing world, and it comes with a few notable examples, like when Muhammad Ali outsmarted the very confident George Foreman, or when Willie Pep failed to outbox his way against Sandy Sandler. The debate between the two styles still goes on to this day and what the boxer Andre Ward and the puncher Sergey Kovalev do in the ring will not be different from history.

The boxer through history has been called in different names, The Master, The Scientist and the Professor. Using their smarts to out point the bigger punchers, and in the span of history, fighters such us Willie Pep, Pernell Whitaker, Muhammad Ali and Floyd Mayweather Jr proved it time and time again in their notable bouts. Such as when Muhammad Ali shocked the world when he stopped a tired George Foreman, or when Pernell Whitaker used his crafty defense and style to confuse the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez. They smarts put them two punches ahead against most fighters.

But not everything can be solved by being the boxer. There were some instances in boxing were boxers become punchers in an effort to win a fight. When Floyd Mayweather Jr. brawled his way to a unanimous decision against Miguel Cotto, or when Pernell Whitaker used his strength to knock out the very dangerous Cuban in Diosbelys Hurtado. In boxing it had been proven time and time again, anything can happen.

But throughout the run of the history boxing, there is always the style that enthralled the fans with their powerful fists and their strong will to win with nothing but determination. And such fighters came in the name of Manny Pacquiao, George Foreman, Roberto Duran and Henry Armstrong.

The Fans always came in to the cheers when punchers began pounding their opponents, like when Manny Pacquiao pounded on the fighters of Mexico for almost a decade. Or when George Foreman put on the fear of a puncher in the heavyweight division for two years by annihilating Joe Frazier and other fighters. And such fighters proved that punchers can indeed win against boxers, liken when the legendary puncher in Sandy Sandler knocked out the defensive expert in Willie Pep and when George Foreman trapped Ken Norton against the ropes to knock him out in two rounds.

And unlike boxers, their goal is always to make sure the fight does not go in the distance.

But exceptions are always in effect. And the same fighters who are considered unintelligent punchers were poised to be boxers in some point in their careers. Like when Manny Pacquiao became the boxer against the bigger fighter and puncher in Oscar De La Hoya, or when George Foreman used his veteran experience to stay low against the younger puncher in Michael Moorer. Punchers had kept the sport of boxing alive from the moment it was born, and would show once again the very exciting history when Sergey Kovalev would bring his fire power to try to stop the smarter Andre Ward.

These styles, the boxer and the puncher kept the fans wanting for more. To keep on letting them cheer in the secrets of the fight science.

And on November 19, 2016 once again the boxer Andre Ward and the puncher Sergey Kovalev would let us witness one of boxing's most exciting moments of history.

Cool. Many of these simpletons on here won't read it but I gotcha.

Definitely a matchup that should have fans excited in the month of November. November as a whole should be great for boxing.

I would use the word boxer to loosely characterize Ward, he has as much in common with Chavez as he does with sweat pea. I think his lack of punching power and decent defense gets him wrongly categorized. When he was at his best Ward was mostly an in fighter and usually the aggressor.

Andre Ward was at his best I think when he fought Arthur Abraham and he boxed there very well.

I think the word best word or phrase to characterize his style would be non style. He's a chameleon, whatever the match requires is what he'll do.

            when did this happen? lol

i think kovalev is a better boxer than he is given credit for. his KO record might take away the attention from his skills maybe.

              I categorize him as a Boxer-Puncher...
He showed for sure he had boxing skills when he took on BHop...albeit an old version of BHop, though he was still beating other young contenders....
