Courtesy of a friend, I just watched the fight on tape and it seems to me that the corner had as much to do with Mayol's failure as his having ran out of gas. FRoach should be a great help.
By the end of round 5, it was clear that Kyowa wasn't going to be KO'd, though he often was on the verge of taking a knee. An astute corner would have told Rodel to ease off in the next couple of rounds and get the jab going (Mayol's jab was close to invisible in the first 5 rounds as he merely crouched to send off his power punches.) Had that been done, Kyowa could not have grabbed Mayol's lowered head with his left as he sent up uppercuts with his right (all that hitting while holding seem to have been likewise invisible to the ref and Mayol's corner who never raised a cry), as well as Kyowa's putting his full body weight on the bent body of Mayol, all of which mostly occured in the mid to late rounds.
It was obvious that the corner wanted a KO (guided by the thought that a visitor scarcely wins on points in Japan), and they told Mayol that, "It's a KO or nothing." They should have changed their strategy when they saw that a KO was becoming very difficult to come by.

Mayol is a world class talent, bottom line. Kyowa is a very difficult opponent to get quality work done against, but Mayol was doing it. Freddie Roach will do a great deal for Mayol, who only needs a trainer. Mayol didn't pace himself adequately and the corner was an absolute mess. Freddie Roach will be a great asset to Rodel Mayol.
