I mean, Hopkins is fighting Smith and it could be competitive and a bit interesting, but for God's sake, Hopkins is 51 years old. Should this even be on TV? With the UFC putting on a stacked card in November, boxing is putting on the 51-year-old in December, most likely on HBO I'm guessing?
Hopkins is exceptional and all, but I don't know. We have Garcia-Vargas on in November. Does anybody really care? Couldn't a more competitive match-up be in place instead?
I'm starting to wonder if a big factor in fighters competing so scarcely these days is having all of their fights on national TV. Does every fight have to be on TV? Everyone has a camera phone anyway and can upload it to Youtube.
Obviously a lot of sponsors support all of this, but I think it's hurting the sport as a whole. Fans want better fights than 50-year-old boxers fighting as shells of themselves. Get the young talent in there for more fights we actually want to see.
