Comments Thread For: Frank Warren: Team Crolla Avoiding "Big Offer" For Flanagan

We are not much the wiser of the true world lightweight pecking order following Anthony Crolla's fairly conclusive defeat to Jorge Linares recently. What we do know is that the wily Linares, with all his experience, had a bit too much nous for the game Crolla. It was evident, despite the ridiculously slanted commentary at certain points in the fight, that he always had something left in the tank, which enabled him to pull away in the crucial championship rounds.

Flanagan might or might not be better than Crolla (I suspect not), but he is an anonymous title holder. He brings nothing to the table. Linares, in contrast, was widely regarded as the number one man in the division. Beating him would have made Crolla number one. No doubt that's why he's bravely going for the return rather than a nothing fight against a boxer no-one outside of Manchester has heard of. If Warren wants Flanagan to eat at the top table he first has to get a name for his lad, by putting him in with someone who commands respect, even if he has to pay top dollar for that.

Not a great fan of Warren but he for once called it dead right re the commentary on SKY. That was a solid victory for Linares, absolutely pointless rerun needed. I have not read one single view that had Crolla winning that fight - if they fought in the US it would be a very comfortable night for Linares. Linares would also do the same to Flannigan - to be honest I wouldn't mind the Crolla/Flannigan fight but neither is at the top of that division or ever likely to be.

Who has Flanagan beat that makes him such an animal?! If I recall correctly Linares was the top dawg at the division before his title was stripped from him (very quickly, might I add). The bias does seem to be a bit strong with this one. I don't think anyone is avoiding Flanagan. I kind of wish Crolla, Garcia, Zlat, or Linares would fight him so I can see what he's really about.

Warren's idea of a big offer isn't close to what Matchroom fighters are making though. Apparently the "huge offer" he offered Brook to fight Liam Smith was less than what Brook made fighting Jo Jo Dan.

The fact is Frank no longer has the money and influence to make huge fights under his own promotion, plus he wants them on BoxNation.

The only way Flanagan v Crolla is if Matchroom put the money up and it's on Sky, which Warren doesn't seem to want to do. Crolla makes decent money, he isn't going to take less to fight a hometown rival for in a world title fight, even if he's no longer the champion, he still draws a good crowd.

I don't get it. Everybody wants a piece of Flanagan except Crolla, but Flanagan has no intention of fighting anybody else. Flanagan was at the Linares fight, he could have challenged Linares face to face in the ring, but he's so scared, he didn't want to get close to Linares, not even to provoke the man he beat. Turbo? 4 cylinder.
