So are we allowed to say that overpaying fighters for mismatches might be a problem, without being called a racist yet?

“We’re businessman, no matter what the situation is,” Russell told ******.com of why he hasn’t fought since April. “The objective is you want to have financial stability no matter what it is that your occupation is. So I think it’s the smart thing to do on our end,” he said of making sure he’s appropriately compensated.

The talented Russell, who holds a featherweight title, framed his career as nearing its end, with just three years left before he moves onto the next phase of his life, making the income he receives for any future fights that much more important. Russell declined to specify the types of financial numbers he’s looking for. But a source said he made in excess of $800,000 for his second-round knockout of Patrick Hyland on April 16.

this guy made almost a million for fighting that hyland dude and won't get back until he gets another big paycheck? lol

how can you justify that kind of money for that crappy fight??
I could care less when or if Gary Russell Jr. returns to the ring. He has fought one quality fighter in his entire career and Russell lost to him. If I had my way, I would put Russell, Adrien Broner and Peter Quillen's careers on the DNR (do not resuscitate) list.

The only way to get that kind of money is by fighting Carl Frampton. That goes for all those guys. He is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow LOL.

Gary Russell is barely a headliner - guy needs to get real. Keep busy until the big one's come, these guys just end up going stale by not fighting enough, its just not smart.

That pep talk that Haymon has given to all his fighters that he said he would make them stars and rich worked to well

Now you have a legion of fighters that think that they are worth more than the are actually valued.

If he wants to get paid more he has to take riskier fighters and top guys.

He has skills but is also the king to the TBA fighters

I just want to see these Featherweights fight each other. I think Russell can beat most of them. I'm sure he'll make good money fighting them. I don't know what he wants.
Just by asking for a higher purse could potentially make him sit out and earn $0. Great freaking idea.

They're all sickening hypocrites. They say they shouldn't have to face a dangerous opponent for anything less than lottery money because it's their health at stake. Fighters have to be taken care of etc. Then they're happy to beat up some hopelessly overmatched guy getting paid peanuts. It is fucking disgusting.

But at the end of the day the system is a disaster and this sort of bullshit Russell is spouting is merely enabled by it. It is far from the root cause. Russell will stop sitting on his ass, waiting for ridiculous money once that strategy stops working. As a fan you just have to pray that someday the sport corrects itself and a guy on Russell's level looking to take one semi-serious fight every two years will starve. That, and only that, will fix the sport.
