I've just become aware of how big an issue CTE is after watching "Concussion" and then reading up on it after. Even as a boxing fan, I had no idea how much of an issue this was in NFL (I'm English), WWE, Rugby and Ice Hockey in particular, and even Dave Mirra the BMX rider was diagnosed with it after his death. Obviously there was the big NFL lawsuit, and I believe there's a current one similarly been submitted by ex Rugby players too. However I still don't believe we've heard the last of this by a long way.
Regarding boxers who appear to have CTE (the only current way to definitively diagnose it is by analysing brain samples after death), to me the following all show big signs; James Toney, Terry Norris, Jermain Taylor, Frank Bruno, Leon Spinks, Arturo Gatti & Edwin Valero (their circumstances in death very much resemble results of suffering the illness) and I read Audley Harrison is having balance and mood issues.
These are just the ones I know of and who spring to mind right now from recent memory. I'm sure if a study was done a massive proportion of fighters would be found to suffer from it. I also read a doctor recently who suggested that OJ Simpson suffered from it, and it was proven after the tragic murder-suicide of himself & his family that Chris Benoit had advanced CTE and severe damage to all four parts of his brain to the point it was "In the condition of an 85 year old patient with advanced Alzheimers".
I love boxing but nowhere near enough is done to protect these guys when they're fighting, nor to help them when they're done. The same goes for the other sports mentioned
No one cares about concussions in combat sports. Isn't that insane? Just because American football is so popular they get all the coverage. People talking about there won't be football in 20 years. Last I checked we still celebrate when men get knocked unconcious
