  • What's Your Opinion On The Current State Of Boxing.

I'm just curious to see how you all view the current state of our sport.

Are we still in a transition period? A year after Floyd retired, we have a situation where the guys who are being touted as the best are either dragging smaller guys up, or are fighting guys who have no chance of winning, or both in some cases. We also a vacuum in the WW division which was dominated for years by Mayweather, which seemingly doesn't want to be filled or plugged, we've got Fury and Wlad going nowhere, etc.

On the flip side, we have Kov vs Ward coming up and Manny coming out of "retirement".

After the Floyd and Manny period (I'm reluctant to call it an era) of domination, are more years like 2016 all we have to look forward to now, or do you all foresee improvement, or further degradation of the sport. Also, if you feel things are going down, how would you turn things around?

Discuss below. Looking for a mature discussion of views and opinions. Fanboy/hater inspired vitriol is not needed.

all you need to know about boxing is that the UK has the most champs.

if it finally does die out we have the brits to thank.

sports a joke at the moment and its been a terrible year for it. Theres so many things wrong with the sport I don't know where to start.
First of all, the emphasis on the undefeated record is probably the biggest problem, fighters wont take any risk. And fighters get moved so so slowly for the most part in order to protect the 0.
This links into the 2nd point which is the amount of mismatches, pretty much every fight these days you know who is going to win before the fight happens.
Undercards also suck, did anyone who bought the canelo smith card feel they got value for money? Brook v golovkin, the main event was one sided and there was no one on the undercard. Promoters cant be completely blamed, fighters expect to be paid too much money for fighting bums, and I think that's why they don't fight on undercards now, they think they are at the top of the tree and too good to fight on undercards.
Think the fans are too lenient when it comes to accepting **** fights, when I mentioned I wasnt impressed with spence fighting and beating bundu (who he was 1/100 to against) I got 2 'negs' and multiple comments calling me clueless, saying I don't 'appreciate the business of boxing' and others telling me bundu was a really good opponent.
Also as someone said on a recent thread, theres no excuse for fighters to be fighting twice a year, why do you need 6 months off for beating up some bum, its ridiculous.
THink many people have been brainwashed, people seem to think like promoters more than fight fans, as I said on another thread why is it so ridiculous for Joshua to fight someone like Ortiz? Why shouldn't a world champ fight the best competition? Not just picking on Joshua, people call me a noob when I say a world champ should fight people on their level, as if its some crazy suggestion. Look at the amount of good welterweights there is, there should be top fights in that division every month lol, not one a year with Thurman v porter.
I could go on and on but the bottom line is that fans, boxers and promoters have lost track of the fact that the whole purpose of this sport is for entertainment, and recently theres been **** all to be entertained by.

Agree with practically everything in this post, especially the point about the leniency showed by fans. The fanatical supporter is a cancer to the sport. Objectives fans can see how our intelligence is being insulted by promoters and boxers alike.

Nobody can convince that Canelo didn't duck GGG, and that GGG's resume is garbage. Nobody can convince me that these two don't get multiple passes from fans, analysts, etc. If you say something negative about either one, you must be a hater or a slurper of the other one. I can't dislike GGG without being a Floyd fan or a Canelo fan. I can't dislike Canelo without being a GGG hater, a racist, or a supremacist.

Fans are playing a major role in the current climate. It doesn't matter how much odium Canelo's career decisions are met with, if he can still get 51,000 people in to watch him live, he'll continue down this path.

Speaking on Hw's I think its the most entertaining its been ever, really. If there was no drama and Klitchko was still knocking out ppl left and right with the supposed WEAK fighters everyone would be complaining ,now we have a ton of fighters and coming up and had really good fights in the last 2 years if you actually watch boxing and not nit pick b/c a top 5 guy didn't fight a top 3 guy yet, when a top 20 guys fought another top 20 guy in a good scrap.

Wilder is keeping us interested b/c you either want to see him get knocked out or lose to a top guy like Joshua or Wlad ....Ortiz vs whoever is eventually going to happen ,and that Ortiz's fault,he has to get himself in the mix and stay active. Briggs is dangerous, Haye is dangerous, Povetkin is lurking and Klitchko want s his belts back and Joshua looks to be the guy to beat currently.

The Parkers ,whytes ,Pulev's, Izu's and Millers along with even the Martins and Breazeales can offer some good fights against each other and will, they have to .Eventually everyone has to fight someone and weve gotten some of those fights, the problem is the fighters besides Wilder are new on the spot,*****in about that is nonsense.

Complaining about the Fury fiasco is legit but also entertaining,if that wasn't going on most would have nothing to complain about really and you would be talking how boring the division is. No era got all the fights they wanted but the 70's,and even then you never saw Foreman vs shavers ( they were afraid of eachother ) Frazier vs Norton ( they were friends ) Holmes vs Foreman ( the biggest 70's fight beyond Foreman /Ali) etc......Lewis vs Bowe never happened and that was the biggest match one could make in the 90's and they had a full decade to do it.

Anyone who says the division is in bad shape don't know what they are talking about, because in reality its better than ever when you look down the list from Klitchko to Briggs and anyone in between, its as stacked as could be.and that's not even including guys coming up like Trey Morrison and George Arias, two guys bound to collide in the future.

Agreed. HW is looking tasty these days. AJ is one of my fav current boxers, and I'm a massive fan a HW who actually LOOKS like a professional athlete, as opposed to a guy like Teper or whatever, who knocked Price out. I'm genuinely looking forward to future HW scraps.
