Both often go hand in hand, as is the case at heavyweight, middleweight and here at lightweight.

                They often don't, too

                Like these examples:

Garcia was RING but not lineal after beating Khan
Hernandez was RING but not lineal
Canelo was RING but not lineal at 154
Stevenson is lineal but not RING
Floyd was RING after beating Guerrero (lol), but universally lineal after beating Manny.

                Plenty of other examples

Just to clarify though, Crolla/Linares is not for the universally recognised lineal title. TBRB would not recognise it. Its still a very good fight.

The lineal title needs disregarding. It means very little.

What do you mean universally recognised? TBRB has no say in lineal what-so-ever.

In the vast majority of boxing history, the lineal title is the Ring title. I don't even see how this is up for debate. Yes it's true that other internet en****** have come up with alternate, historical lists of lineal champs, mainly to fill in the blank from when The Ring shut its doors in 89 but that doesn't carry the same prestige in boxing, no matter what some forum users may like to say.

I personally dislike the fact that The Ring is owned by a boxing promoter and we've seen how they have skewed the p4p rankings multiple times but in most cases, if you use common sense and boxing knowledge, you know hwo the top 2 or 3 guys in a division are.

Canelo may be regarded as lineal middleweight champ for example and Ring champ (can't remember if they stripped him) but does anyone doubt GGG is the better middleweight?

Now, in a division like lightweight with no singular stand out, Linares v Crolla genuinely is for the top spot. Call it lineal, Ring or whatever you like.
