Comments Thread For: Canelo To Make a Ring Return Prior To Cinco De Mayo Date?

It was announced on Monday morning by Golden Boy Promotions that Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs) - coming off his ninth-round TKO of Liam Smith to capture the WBO junior middleweight title - would be sidelined the rest of the year with a fractured right thumb.

Problem is that these critics are vicious. Any fight that isn't GGG is going to be bad mouthed strongly.

I want to see the GGG fight but seems like Sept 2017 is going to be the date for it.

Don't bet on it. Alvarez fights twice a year. May and Sept are the most logical dates.

Hopefully this frees up HBO's budget in December to pay for GGG-Jacobs. If HBO could have delivered Lemieux-Stevens in September, Kovalev-Ward in November, GGG-Jacobs in December, and Canelo-Lemieux/Stevens in December, that would have made up for a bad year and given HBO their best year in recent memory. Unfortunately that didn't happen, but the best fights out of those are Kovalev-Ward and GGG-Jacobs, so if HBO can deliver Kovalev-Ward in November, and GGG-Jacobs in December, that's what is most important.

I hope HBO can do that. Those are the two big fights to end this year, given that Canelo is still ducking GGG, that will move both 175 and 160 forward. Those are the key fights so I really hope HBO delivers that, if Jacobs stops ducking GGG.

It's crazy how suddenly now that HBO is out of money, everyone was ready to fight each other. Lomachenko-Walters would've happened. Lemieux-Stevens. Chocolatito-Estrada II might have happened by now. It sucks HBO's budget ran out this year of all years. Why couldn't it have run out back when Haymon was foisting Andre Berto on us on HBO?

Anyway HBO's focus at this point should be quality over quantity. Put that budget to the fights fans want to see, forget the rest. Focus on getting GGG, Kovalev, Chocolatito, Lomachenko, Canelo, etc top opponents. As fun as fights with Salido and Vargas are, I'd rather that money go to top fights among the elite fighters, that have big relevance to the top of the sport. If HBO has $ for all of it, then great, those action fights are great too, and those fighters deserve good money. But most important to me as a fan is seeing those well matched fights but at the elite level, with action fighters like GGG and Kovalev who are also the best in the world. I think it's very important to GGG's career for HBO to get him either Jacobs, Ramirez, Degale, or Eubank before the end of the year.

destroyed his career because of fear. there's taking a loss to floyd and then there's takign a loss to ggg and being beat to a pulp. never say boxers don't get scared. proof right here.

Doesn't Canelo have to one fight per year on his HBO contract? If so I'm sure HBO will pressure him to do a fight in January or February before May.

If that's the case David Lemieux, Curtis Steven's, and Billy Jo Saunders can all be in play for Golden Boy and Canelo.

He's needs to fight 3 times a year

This is the logical option. A guy like Lemieux, Stevens or Johnson would be acceptable here. I can't imagine the May PPV being with any of the guys mentioned. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it's another welterweight like Pacquiao, Bradley, Garcia or Thurman because they have the biggest names. BJS makes sense to fans, but it's hard to see a 3rd straight UK fighter who is unknown to casual US fans selling well, and at least GGG would go to his turf, so I can see him going that direction first. And Canelo-Jacobs just isn't gonna happen.

Regardless, he can't finish 2017 without GGG.
