"I am one of those fighters who will step into the ring with anyone, I think it's now the time for Canelo to step in there with Triple G because everyone has been waiting for that fight." -Amir Khan
"Amir took the risk, he gave up everything, no concessions, now it's time for him [Alvarez] to stop hiding behind little stuff, OK? Amir set the tone - fighters should fight each other." -Virgil Hunter
That was after the fight, and a particularly brutal knockout. Now before the fight, Liam Smith has said that Canelo "ducked Golovkin massively" and that deep down Canelo knows he loses to Golovkin.
This is bizarre behavior. This is just not done in boxing. First of all, it's a bit inappropriate. You don't see fighters or their trainers commenting on who their opponent should face next, or who they should have fought instead of themselves.
It's also bizarrely humble, which is unusual for top fighters with huge egos and the necessary belief in their own abilities. Khan and Smith are basically conceding that Golovkin is a better fighter than they are. That's a huge concession. If Smith thought he was as good as GGG or that he could beat GGG, he wouldn't be saying his opponent (who is favored to beat him) is avoiding GGG and knows he can't beat GGG.
The anger his own opponents have, despite being paid well, shows that they do not appreciate being hand picked to lose. More than that, Khan, Hunter and now Smith clearly feel Canelo, the somehow still linear middleweight champ, has a duty to do what he said he would, to do what is best for boxing, and make the biggest fight in boxing.
To quote Shannon Briggs and Canelo, let's go champ. No more F...ing around.
