    Civil War in Puerto Rico!

    Posted by Gerardo M Avila-Planas on 01-30-2005 |

What do you get when you put two proud and relentless heavy punchers inside the same ring?...Fireworks over Bayamon. Last night, Nelson “Fuegete”Dieppa and Alex “El Nene” Sanchez staged one of the most exciting fights in the last couple of decades within Puerto Rico. In fact, it was such and exciting event, some fans and press members have already declared it fight of the year for 2005.

Dieppa and Nene started out the fight testing each other out, avoiding heavy exchanges at the early stages of the first round, but would not last as Nene opened up his attack with power punches, forcing Fuegete to fire back with his own arsenal to end the first round.

From there on, the fight became a brawl with Nene becoming the stalker and Dieppa using the ring and stopping from time to time to go toe-to-toe with his opponent.

There was cut in round two over the left eye of Dieppa that affected him for the remainder of the fight. “The cut bothered me quite a bit because the blood was dripping inside my eye, but this is like the c*** fights, even if your eye gets blown out you have to keep going,” Dieppa would later say during the post fight interview.

During to middle to latter rounds Nene established a fierce attack to the body, which Dieppa admitted later, took a toll and weakened his movement quite a bit. As round ten progressed Sanchez got the crowd behind him with chants of “Nene, Nene”.

After ten rounds, Dieppa was ahead in one card by three points, and by two points on the other. We had the bout even and Sanchez winning the 11th round, when at 2:15 of that round the atomic bomb struck.

As Nene left himself open after missing a right, Dieppa connected with a perfect power bomb right that knocked Sanchez unconscious to the canvas. Sanchez needed medical attention and after laying motionless in the canvas for some 10 minutes, was eventually taken out on a stretcher. It was a dramatic finish to a truly exciting fight.

After the fight, a battered-faced Dieppa said, “I gained a lot of respect for Nene tonight. I never thought he would give me the kind of fight he did and he deserves a lot of credit for what he did tonight.

When asked what he would like next, he said that he has a mandatory against Hugo Cazares (who also fought in the same card) but that he would be more than happy to either unify in his division or challenge fellow Puerto Rican Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon. “I would even be willing to bypass my mandatory to fight either Burgos or Arce and unify,” concluded Dieppa.

In the undercard, it was work as usual for Eric Morell as he took the whole twelve rounds to technically dominate late sub Juan Alfonso Keb Bass from Mexico. Morell used his superior boxing resources and a four-inch height advantage to overcome his opponent in an unexciting bout.
Also, Jose Cotto only needed 1minute twenty seven seconds to dispose of his opponent, Panamanian Armando Cordova. It was Jose’s first landed punch, a straight right to the chin that sent Cordova to the canvas and left him there for a few minutes. With this win, Cotto improves his record to 24-0 and 16 ko’s. Impressively, twelve of Cotto’s 16 knockouts have come in the first round.

WBO Light Flyweight mandatory Hugo Cazares, now 18-3-1, won via unanimous decision over game Miguel Del Valle (8-10,2). Cazares had a hard works night as he was forced to bring the best of himself to come up with the victory. Hugo knocked down Del Valle in round 6 and later visited the canvas himself in round 9. Judges scored it 95-93 two ways and 96-92 for Cazares.
Finally, 2004 Olympians and debutants Alex “Pollo” De Jesus and Juan Manuel Lopez started off their careers with knock out victories over Rafael Mesorana and Luis Colon respectively.
