Canelo and Cotto was agreed to well before Cotto had the MW belt. He wanted to be the first Puerto Rican champ with titles in four classes. Him having the belt had nothing to do with Canelo. They were supposed to fight a while before that but Cotto wanted to move up first. So they would have fought had he had the belt or not GGG trying to make it look like canelo fought him because he wanted his belt, not the case.


GGG had the choice to have Cotto stripped or take step aside money and he took the money only to get the belt back after canelo gave it up, because he never wanted it anyway.

GGG tried to manipulate himself into a money fight with canelo and it backfired big time, he's an idiot.

Cotto and Canelo fought for the WBC MW championship. Both men agreed that the winner would face Golovkin, who was the WBC interim champ, having defeated Rubio. Golovkin agreed to the step aside money on the condition that he would be next. Both men knew this.

Days before the scheduled bout, Cotto was stripped by the WBC for failure to pay sanctioning fee. The bout continued on the premise that the title would be vacant had Cotto won, and Canelo would be crowned champion if he had won. Canelo paid the WBC sanctioning fee. Canelo won by decision and in the ring stated he was afraid of no one, including Golovkin. Negotiations for the Canelo-Golovkin bout were supposed to begin on January 1.

Canelo asked the WBC for an extension to allow him a voluntary defense of the WBC MW belt to help him acclimate to the MW division, citing that he had never fought at the limit of 160. The WBC granted the extension on the premise that if he won his voluntary, he would have to face GGG. For his voluntary defense, Canelo chose Amir Khan and won with what some consider the KO of the year.

Upon defeating Khan, Canelo invited Golovkin into the ring, said he would fight at the full limit of 160, saying the now infamous quote, "We dont fu©k around in Mexico." Negotiations were scheduled to begin the following Monday for the Canelo-Golovkin bout. Negotiations came to a halt approximately 10 days later, when Canelo announced that he was vacating the WBC MW belt, and returning to the 154 division. At that point, the WBC installed Golovkin as the WBC MW world champion.

I believe these are the facts of the case, which I have tried to present without inserting any bias. Canelo had ample opportunity to vacate the belt. Instead, after winning the WBC belt, and after his successful defense of the title, insisted that he was afraid of no one. He called GGG into the ring and told him that they would fight at 160.

You say he never wanted the belt. Canelo paid a sanctioning fee to obtain this belt, and paid a subsequent sanctioning fee to defend the belt. That is a lot of money to fork over for a belt "he never wanted". Canelo asked the WBC for an extension to defend a belt "he never wanted." He went through a lot of trouble, time, and ultimately embarrassment for a belt "he never wanted"
