Comments Thread For: Claressa Shields Secures Second Gold Medal With Big Rio Win

Standing 5'8" to Fontijn's 5'9", Shields showed her versatility and speed in this fight to win her second gold medal. Shields, 21, set the tone early, coming out swinging with a wicked hook aimed at Fontijn, 29. But Fontijn showed herself to be elusive, bobbing out of the way of some of Shields' most dangerous blows. She also kept a left jab ready, to try to fend off Shields.

        Cong****, Claressa.

She's only 21, if she sticks around four more years she can pick up a third gold medal. Might not be a bad idea given how little attention women's pro boxing gets.

Nice. Shields is a bad ass. Although kinda embarrassing that the women are killing the men on the US side since they've been in the Olympics.

Curious if she's sticking around for a third gold medal or will try to pursue something in the pros. With how bs the female pro boxing looks in particular at her weight she might find it more productive to become the most famous female amateur boxer in history if she sticks around for another Olympics or three & pick up some more medals preferably gold ones.

              She could just do both.

Don't most of the alphabet groups ban you from title fights if you fight in the Olympics? At her weight the only semi-competitive fights she'd be in are title fights so idk how viable that method would be assuming they keep the current rules.

                  Crazy that she's only 21.

If she's thinking about turning pro, she should take Spence's advice and try MMA way more money. The only problem would be that she would have to cut a lot of weight because the UFC doesn't have a weight class above 135 for women. Shields fights at 165.

Crazy how Clarissa is listed at 5 foot 8, and her opponent 5 foot 9, That netherlands chick looked at least 6 foot tall way more than an inch taller than shields.
