Rudy Markussen is an underrated legend of Scandinavian boxing, with a unique skillset unlike anything seen among other fighters. He's a Danish superstar who had nothing served to him and who had to fight for it the hard way.
Before his last fight against Patrick Nielsen, he was widely regarded as one of the best European boxers, but after he lost, people started hating. I don't think that's fair, as Rudy had only had 1 fight in the last 3 years. He was old and shot.
Rudy had 26 KOs in 39 fights, which is a testimony to his great punching power. Likewise, he also proved his skills by outboxing (and getting robbed) against Sven Ottke, an undefeated Jimmy Hagard, undefeated Tim Pilant, Danilo Haussler, etc. He was also giving Magee a boxing lesson before his confidence got too high, leaving him open to a perfect lucky shot to the liver.
Rudy has retired, but I'm very confident that he would have given DeGale, Arthur Abraham and Badou Jack a lesson they would never forget. Rudy wouldn't be able to beat guys like Ward and most likely not guys like Froch neither, but he was an elite boxer and I think it's kinda sad that he doesn't get the recognition he deserves.
Guys like Rudy, Rigo, Ward and Bradley are never appreciated when they're active, but the very least we could do is to recognize the greatness of their careers when they retire.
