I have a friend who is a boxing promoter and he is rather rich. Why just be fans of the sport when you can base your entire career around it. Has anyone ever considered or tried to work as a boxing promoter? It seems like a really exciting and passionate job.

I've seriously considered it, but you have to be pretty sure you can make money and once you realize all of the guidelines and fees to stage a fight you will most likely back down. Unless you got a good bank account or a decent amount of investors I wouldnt consider it.
I know in my state you have to supply insurance and exams before and after the fight by doctors, hire and pay officials and judges plus their is a promoters license fee of 5000 dollars and then you have to pay the venue having it with their fees and THEN you have to pay the fighters their purse. Their is a lot more involved but easily adds up.
Its Risky business, The only reason Don King is where he is at, is because he got Muhammad Ali to fight for him to do something to a hospital in Cleveland and the whole Rumble in the Jungle ordeal.
GOOD LUCK! -
I have considered it too and as you mentioned about all of the fees you have to pay...basically once everything is paid for the promoters take is the alcohol sales, or at least that is what was explained too me.
Obviously King and ARum do a lot better then just the beer sales but for small time promoters thats where they make there money.
Most promoters don't make ****...I heard some funny stories about Cedric Kushner bouncing multiple checks to big name fighters before, plus if you are smalltime how do you sign a fighter that is going to be good...you don't you have to get lucky and find some animal that no one has ever heard of...tough racket...try starting a boxing website like the boys at maxboxing have done. that would be easier and a lot more fun.Comment

Plus you are always going to have the established promoters trying to steal your fighters or make sure your fights don't happen using their influence. I know a guy who is a promoter and Lou DiBella is basically making sure he can't build a business. Just be carefull. Probably best to start in a twon without someone who has a stranglehold. From the ticket sales for the Spinks fight it sounds like St Louis is a great place to try to start promoting.Comment

Even the non-Corey Spinks fighters in St. Louis? I know he has both Spinks and Judah so this fight is all about pitting the winner against DLH, but he can't already have taken over the Lou, right? I wouldn't put it past him though. He is one savy promoter. Ticket sales like that must have him drooling over St. Louis. He is kind of like boxing's Fidel Castro. Ruthless, sharp and in complete control.Originally posted by spinksjinxDon King now owns St. Louis.Comment

He owns that whole card haha...I know he has contractual obligations with Beck and Barrett on the undercard as well as a few others on the card. King usually kept himself East Side oriented and Arum was West, Since top rank and Golden Boy are doing westcoast and being successful King is moving in (his son has a lot do with it) King is now promoting fight in florida and now chicago and missouri as well as a few in Vegas. King is a promoter who hates promoting in casinos and likes paid gate audiences so we will definately see him springing across the midwest with the success Tennesse and St. Louis is promoting.Originally posted by boxernycEven the non-Corey Spinks fighters in St. Louis?
