  • Comments Thread For: Team USA: Can Claressa Shields be a Game Changer?

By Cliff Rold - There has been nothing wrong with referring to bantamweight Shakur Stevenson as Team USA's best chance at an Olympic gold medal in boxing. There has been everything wrong with anyone failing to qualify the statement. Stevenson is the best shot at a men's gold. With a walkover off an injury...

Wow 0 comments, not surprised. This woman seems to be the goods, unfortunately not many are interested in women's boxing. I'll be rooting for her though

Women's professional boxing is pretty much dead in this country. Which is a shame because if Shields manages to win gold again then she would have a far better pedigree in her sport than Rousey did in judo.

Game changer?!?! She's talented & seems to be predicted by most as having the gold medal all but around her neck already, but womens boxing is far away from having the depth to have much appeal to sports fans.

I think the reality is men are just better at sports on average. Sure there are freak woman like Shields, Cyborg Santos, Ronda Rousey, Venus & Serena & numerous others in all kinds of sports, but mostly womens sports seem like watching a D-League basketball game or a AA minor league baseball or to be more blunt an inferior product to something men are already doing on a higher level. Coupled with the fact the average woman doesn't enjoy watching most sports, male or female, makes it hard for any womens sport to catch much fire since they don't even have the eyes & attention of women like they need to get very far.

There is no depth and pretty much no quality in women's pro boxing at her weight, especially in the US. Okay, maybe she can fight Hammer, but then what? With American boxing in the state it is, how interested are people going to be in her busting up fighters like Kali Reis? I think things could dry up for her really fast there.

She already makes money as an amateur and gets boosted exposure whenever the Olympics come around. I think she should stick to that, and perhaps have some amateur bouts as special features on pro cards.

For many fighters, staying amateur makes more sense than turning pro, and I think she's one of these types.

I agree 100%. I really like her style and how much she uses her strong jab. She's fun to watch.

No doubt. Winning 2 gold medals would be a great accomplishment for her.

She should immediately get an MMA trainer and build her up like they did lil g and Rousey, put her in with people she can easily beat and Build up a Superfight between her and Rousey.
