It must be very frustrating to step into the ring with Andre Ward. He's a masterful boxer-clincher.

As the superior boxer he preempts that his opponent will quickly figure that they have to take the fight to him, to try and dominate and impose their will because they can't outbox him. He negates that by clinching. They can't take the fight to him because when they try, ultimately, he causes a pause in the fight and it then reconvenes on his terms not theirs. They could resort to roughhousing but he's already initiated that so that won't work either.

Unless a fighter has legitimate one punch K.O power he has little chance against Ward.

It's a shame that a fighter of his skill resorts to the simplistic defense of holding so often. Its not boxing, but that's on Virgil Hunter. He's said time and again that first and foremost when somebody entrusts their son to his tutelage his primary concern is to keep them safe. The easiest way to do that when boxing is to stop boxing and force your opponent to stop to. Ward does that about every 25 seconds.

He's reaped the rewards of that but he's also paying the price.
