  • HBO hurts itself by shunning Pacquiao

The end is coming for HBO boxing.

Dwindling viewership a budget that will continue to get chopped and PPVS that can't break 300k buys (means they can't make money on them).

Pacquiao was the last carrot they had to dangle in front of welter in order to generate them higher paydays than the $2 million max for regular license fees. Now PBC and Showtime are firmly in the driver's seat.

When HBO gets out of boxing, it will be great for US boxing as PBC will own everything.

If it's true HBO let they're biggest star go they better hope May-Pac 2 doesn't happen.

It has to do with Pac's stance on gays.

Exactly what I'm thinking! If they fight again HBO will be left out the outside looking in which will be bad for business I'm sure

Then again, Arum and Pacquiao don't need HBO to sell a PPV!

I would disagree. They still have Canelo, #1 PPV draw. They have Crawford, Kov, Ward, and chocolito, arguably the top 4 p4p in the sport. They have GGG and Loma who are highly skilled fan favorites who are 1 big win away IMO from being legitimate top 7 p4p boxers. They have Ortiz who is a big punching HWT.

The only problem is HBO doesn't have access to quality opposition for their top guys. Soon as they get it they will be ok.

So... Canelo-Smith is projected to do how many buys?

Didn't Crawford just do less than 50k buys vs Postol? What ratings did Ward and Kov just do?

GGG-LEMIEUX bombed on PPV. Loma is a no name that draws no ratings.

Did you really say Luis Ortiz? Ahahahahahahahaha

HBO has a $25 million budget that is continuously getting smaller. PBC and Schaefer have $600 million in cash to play with and Mayweather is set to come back next year.

            Game will be over soon...

Look man, I am no HBO guy. That said, I think their problem is the opposition, not the names.

Canelo-Smith is bogus, as is GGG/Brook. If they do Canelo/GGG, that the biggest fight in the sport.

Crawford/Postol and Ward/Kov should not be PPV, I agree. Now if they put these 2 fights on the same card on WCB (which 5 years ago they would have) and you have a GREAT card.

Ortiz is poised to be an opponent for wilder, joshua or the wlad/fury 2 winner. I think a fight with any of them would draw.

don't forget that GGG and Loma have become the face of the populist movement in boxing.

I do agree once schaeffer gets in the game things on PBC side should improve.

Pacquiao is their biggest name, but his name is now blacklisted due to his comments about Gays being unnatural and abnormal or worse than animals.

Pac lost every single endorsement in America, they removed him, ABC banned him, grove banned him, he is a Pariah who nobody wants to touch right now.

Before this man was the most loved boxer amongst ******* ********s and gays in hollywood. I remember that gay movie producer even went to visit him at wild card and he said go Manny kick Floyds ass!

Pac could get away with almost anything, but the one thing you cannot get away with is to insult the gays or ******** by calling them sick or abnormal once you say that you are as good as done.

Pac could have slept with 40 women while married, sniffed a line of coke on a hookers butt crack, get into bar room brawls, smoke weed while getting a BJ from a groupie, and still get a pass, this is how loved this man was, he got passes on anything until he decided to go in on the gays. Pac really thought he could say anything he wanted, until he finally pushed his luck.

Doesn't seem like HBO is all that invested in boxing to be honest, if anything it feels like they could be out of the boxing business all together or they will have to do something they really don't want to do and that is work with Haymon because while HBO has a Quality Roster all of their guys are basically out of Options. WTF is next for Crawford? WTF is next for Lomachenko? WTF is next for even the winner of Ward vs Kovalev? What is next for GGG after Brook if Canelo doesn't fight him?

Quality Opponents is just as important as the "Star" neither of these guys will ever reach Mayweather or Pacquiao level as far as being able to fight anybody and still Draw like it was before they fought. Big Ratings and Big PPV Buys come from Match ups that are considered 50/50. This is not Tyson ERA, nobody is tuning in for Glorified Mismatches!

Loma has become the face of nothing to be honest. Nobody knows him and he doesn't draw.

The rest of what you propose is pure hypotheticals.

If GGG-CANELO happens... great but so what. It's one fight that will happen on PPV which does zero for HBO's boxing subscriber base.
