Some folks here swear that HBO rakes in tons of money from PPV. This is obviously not the case with HBO telling Arum no go on Pac-Vargas based on the Crawford-Postol numbers.

If HBO really made money on PPV, they would be OK with doing both Pac-Vargas and Ward-Kov in the same month.

HBO makes a small percentage, but I would suspect they need at least 300k buys to cover their production and talent expenses, not to mention the additional cost of buying the rebroadcast and library rights..........

Its also quite possible that Arum was asking HBO to guarantee a minimum number of buys (in order to keep him from losing a pile of money again), and they might not have been willing to do so......

How much do you believe HBO made from Cotto-Canelo?

I read somewhere they take 5% of the PPV.

        900k x 60 = 54 mil, 5% of 54 = 2.7 mil

I think HBO dropped out of the Manny Pacquiao business when he made those anti gay comments, they were already tied into a contract for the Pacquiao vs Bradley 3 fight and said they couldn't dishonor their contract with Manny at the time they made it known that they support LGBT and strongly opposed Mannys views.

Pacs comments destroyed him with every sponsor, network, no big name will ever align themselves with him again. I don't even get why Arum bothers staging the fight in the USA? Is Arum really this naive? he would make more money making that fightin Europe or Asia, Pac is basically a Pariah in America now with the big name companies and networks.

That's not very much at all considering marketing costs, production, and paying for replay rights.

It's profit, fights on regular HBO are an expense. So it's a win for them.

It shrinks their own audience so it's not a win-win.

If the suits see viewership drop each year, budget gets cut and the cycle continues...

No Jim Lampley? I might Buy Now!

Arum might be done with HBO all together at this point

I bet Arum ain't talk to nobody. He's just trying to angle Pacquiao vs Crawford by any means necessary.
