Every great MW has been avoided by the champion and top fighters for years before they were able to claim official dominance. Greb had to wait as the #1 contender for years before Johnny Wilson was allowed by the mob to fight him. Massachusetts senator Ted Kenneday and Speaker of the House Tip Oneil pushed to get Hagler a shot at the title b/c he had been so avoided. Hopkins never had his first title unification until he 35 years old, and that was after winning his first title as a vacant title.

The difference between those guys and Gennady is today, there's 4 independent titles, so guys like BJS can hide away w/o ever having to fight Golokvin. Also, there's big tv money, where we see guys fighting only 1-2 a year b/c they make so much. They no longer need to fight the best to make the most. Before the Quillin fight, the most Danny Jacobs ever made was $550k, now he's calling $1.5mill chump change.
