Well, this depends on which version of Diaz shows up. If it's anything close to the one that fought Marquez somehow, Diaz wins convincingly.

However, it's been years since that fight. By now, I imagine Diaz isn't the fighter he used to be at all. Plus, he was never a big puncher. Overall, it seems like a calculated risk by Top Rank, as they're probably counting on Diaz being right in front of Verdejo and getting knocked out.

He took some time off, came back, took time off...I like baby bull...the timing of this fight is crappy

he has been inactive and is gonna fight a red hot prospect

Juan Diaz was lucky enought(not really) to campaign at 135 when an all time great champion was there. Juan Manuel Marquez. He WAS an elite lightweight but their 2 fights showed the difference between a good young champion vs a great older champion

What made him an elite lw...his wins over freitas and julio diaz? Nate campbell pulled the plug on his hopes of becoming elite. Diaz was a very good fighter, but lacked power and was a bit one dimensional.

regardless of what he lacked he was a top 5 lightweight of his era, a unified titeholder

that = elite for his division...it took an all time great and other elite fighters to beat him...also Paulie was one of the better 140 guys too

elite doesnt mean all time great or great fighter but one of the top guys of your day

Fair enough. I look at it more in terms of level of fighter period...a fighter who has just reached "that level". We all know it when it happens, and he was one step below imo. Still a tough out, but i think he's heading to gatekeeper status if he continues. This fight could prove me wrong, and prove a lot things about both guys and where they're at in their careers tho.

Nice name opponent & winnable fight for Verdejo. I don't see it happening on a Manny undercard doe cuz that sounded like Arum making **** up vs what Manny was saying unless I missed some new news.

He is a past prime former titleholder now, in his 30s...of course he is going to be a gatekeeper now, but in his prime he was an elite lightweight...cant take that away from him.

classic crossroads fight, I just wish they let him knock some rust off first with a lower level fighter

A level below elite for me, prime or otherwise. He didn't exactly win his titles off the greatest opponents. Anyway, he's only 32 and has had layoffs, he can be nearly as good as he was if he took care of his body. He has a fight scheduled next month, so that'll be 2 tune ups going in.
