    Cotto's training session

By Rolando (Member of Miguel Cotto's site)

    Good afternoon Guys !!!!

    As per requested.

I passed by the Bairoa Boxing gym today to Watch a full session of training performed by the WBO champion Miguel Angel Cotto. First of all, the first thing that im going to say about Miguel Cotto is that he really impressed me today. This kid is already in shape!!! He already has the six pack and looks in tremendous condition.

Cotto is sparring with two young southpaws from the United States. One of them is a Brazilian, whom is very fit and strong. His body looks like lovemore ndou. The other guy (Afro-American) is slim, fast hands, fast foot work and good lateral movements.
Here’s the session from the time cotto enters until he leaves.

4:15 p.m. Cotto arrives to the gym, goes directly to the locker room and changes clothing.

4:21 p.m. He starts stretching out his arms, legs, rotates his ankles in a circular motion, his neck and does a few floor exercise.

4:29 p.m. He starts shadow boxing, leading off with his jab and basic one two punches.
After loosing up and starting to get sweaty, he throws quick combinations for a few minutes. (about 3 rounds of shadow boxing)

4:45 p.m. He wraps his hands, puts on a head mask and laces up his boxing gloves.
He enters the ring and the afroamerican enters aswell.
The buzzer sounds and the two square off. Round 1- Cotto quickly goes to the attack with his quick popping jab, His opponent starts moving around the ring in lateral movements while cotto hunts him down throwing beautiful combinations and great body punches. His opponent tries to attack cotto but cotto counters him and continue with the pressure.

Round 2- Cotto again starts off with lots of pressure chasing his opponent and cutting off the ring until he traps his opponent in the corner and unleashes a vicious combination to the body and to the head. Thank god that guy has a body protector or else he would have been down with no air. His opponent is throwing punches but Cotto keeps making him pay for every mistakes with skillful combinations and accurate punches. Cotto is working the right hand finishing his combos with is. Its obvious that his best weapon is that left hook that its so quick and accurate. Especially to the body.

Round 3- His opponent is running around the ring with a desperate look in his face to end the sparring session while cotto chases him and pounds him with body shots and hooks.

They spar 5 rounds. Cotto being the aggressor and chasing his opponent down and trapping him unleashing combinations upstairs and downstairs.

THE BRAZILIAN COMES IN THE RING…
Fresh and new. He’s a strong well condition southpaw fighter.
( goes to a corner, kneels down and starts praying. He does the cross from his forhead to his chest and from shoulder to shoulder a few times)
The buzzer sounds and the brazilian quickly goes to work throwing lots of punches while cotto goes to his defense mode. The brazilian looks very comfortable in there and he’s throwing nice punches and being the aggressor, Cotto is backing up but responds with a hard left hook that shakes the brazilian. Now the aggressor is Cotto after the brazilian realized cottos power.

Round 7 to 10 is basically the same…. Cotto throwing beautiful combinations and hard body shots. Working his right hand and finishing the combos with it.

5: 20 Cotto ends 10 rounds of sparring with two slick southpaws. He looks like he can go another 5 rounds. Great conditioning.

5: 23 Cotto starts pounding the punching bag with POWERFUL combinations, working the right hand and rocking the hell out of the bag with his left hook. He does 3 rounds of extents power punching.

5: 35 Cotto takes off his gloves and goes back to shadow boxing, throwing those combinations and jumping around, focusing on his balance while he throws, sweating and working on his rhythm he does 3 rounds of shadow boxing displaying his skills and moves.

5: 50 he finishes and takes a seat to rest for a while. ( he’s right next to me)
I ask him if he’s going up to 147 after this fight and he answers no.
I ask him does he knows who he’s going to fight next after his next fight he answers no.
I wish him good luck and give him a handshake and he smiles and says Gracias.

Cotto looks physically strong, well condition and very sharp. He’s not a fighter who throws a lot of punches but rather a fighter who conserves his energy and unleashes powerful combinations when he’s near. He’s not very fast but like I said, he conserves his energy and makes up for it with accurate power shots.

Miguel Cotto will leave to florida on Sunday May 7th to start the intense part of training and he should do a weight in round the 9th. This weight in is mandatory by the WBO rules. Each fighter has to weight themself 1 month before the fight and 1 week aswell.

That’s it. Have a nice day guys.

The only thing that bugs me about Cotto is he is fairly slow. Maybe a move to 147 would help his speed/chin BUT I do see a possibility of him being outboxed by Paulie.
