he's a natural, tricky 175 lber and very much a solid tune up / stay busy fight going into the biggest fight in boxing. he's much more proven than the last kid ward fought, and he's not a blown up / retired guy, the way smith was. better fight than brand by a long shot. he's quite durable, and will be a puzzle that kovalev has to figure out, and it will likely take hiim several rounds to do it. that's EXACTLY what he needs. like barrera for ward, this is a very solid choice for an opponent who serves a purpose as a place setter.


whats with the strawmans, anywyaa? nobody is trying to make this fight into something it isn't/ this is a table setter for the most important fight in boxing, ward - kovalev.



so in what regard is this a "poor decision?" becus you don't like kovalev? i see no compelling arguments at all, and a lot of complaining.

Chilemba is a solid fighter w/ a decent record

Fans have to understand that every fight isn't going to be against a killer or you wouldn't last long in the sport of boxing and all good fighters fight B to A level opponents throughout the year. You don't want a lot of wear and tear before a big fight.

you did say he wasn't a good fight to prepare for andre ward, and i'd argue that he's one of the best fights to prepare for andre ward at 175 lbs. other than hopkins, who kovalev already beat up.

i have not seen that fight. is it worth watching?

if i had a dollar for every time i watched a fight and regretted taking the hour out of by day i'd have a lot of dollars. and if i ddn't wathc the fights i'd have a lot of hours, which are worht more to me than a buck

It was a legit loss.
Chilemba is not any sort of preparation for Ward. His guard is lax if not altogether sloppy. Poor precision. Nothing about him says "Ward" and he's no threat to Kovalev in any regard. I will say he's rugged and seems to have decent stamina but he's certainly nothing special.

Legit loss? He made Kovalev look like a ****ing bum at some moments

I'm glad Chilemba gave a good account of himself. I'm surprised he got such a raw deal in some threads on NSB in the build up.
He's not a elite level boxer, but he's a good legit boxer, underrated, and hard work for his opponents.

He frustrates his opponents and stops them from looking good. We saw that in his close fights with Bellew and Alvarez.
He's not going to beat guys like Kovalev, but he will make them work for their win. As well as having his moments.

I went along and watched him close up when he boxed on these shores, and while not a big fan of his style, i give him his due as he's decent IMO.

Great defensive fighters don't get hit with 32% of Edison Miranda's power shots, Chilemba landed 52% of his power punches on him too and couldn't do anything lol.

Chilemba was never a threat, easy to hit and just a 34% knockout rate.

this actually turned out to be a good test for kovelev had the fight 8-4 kovo with a extra point for the kd, but chilemba was getting that jab threw something ward would exploit.
