Comments Thread For: Duva: Chilemba a 'Real' Foe For Kovalev; Prepares Him For Ward

His promoter suspects Sergey Kovalev is in for a more difficult fight Monday than the odds indicate. Numerous Internet sports books list Isaac Chilemba as a 16-1 underdog against Russia's Kovalev, but Kathy Duva envisions Kovalev having more trouble than that when they fight for Kovalev's IBF, WBA and WBO light heavyweight titles at DIVS Sports Palace in Ekaterinburg, Russia. South Africa's Chilemba is a smart, sound boxer, hasn't been knocked out during his 10-year professional career and is well aware that this is an opportunity to completely change his life

Well yea, we know he exists and is a boxer... unless we are all living in a computer simulation.

16-1 underdog, lol. I didn't realize the odds were that bad. I'm severely disappointed by the opposition both he and Ward are facing before Nov but, if there's one silver lining, it means they're unlikely to be worn or injured going into Nov (fingers crossed).

it's pretty disingenuous to equate this fight with ward-brand. yes, kovalev is expected to win just like ward is, but there are levels to boxing and chilemba is a solid one or two above brand

              have you seen chilemba fight?

he's really not a bad technician or boxer. he's big, has a solid chin. he's just ugly as F and, foreign, and has no power. easy fighter to rob.

he's been on the other end of split decisions or draws in fighters' hometowns.

i actually like this fight to keep kovalev busy. chilemba has some good moves, and kovalev will stay busy, get rounds, and maybe even learn a thing or two about dealing with slick fighters.

i will say this: chiliemba is coming off of a loss, and i haven't seen the fight. it was against a canadian transport in canada, and an MD. again, a fighter with a style like chilemba can be easy to discount on the scorecards.

                It was a legit loss.
Chilemba is not any sort of preparation for Ward. His guard is lax if not altogether sloppy. Poor precision. Nothing about him says "Ward" and he's no threat to Kovalev in any regard. I will say he's rugged and seems to have decent stamina but he's certainly nothing special.

nobdy is calling hiim a hall of famer.

he's a natural, tricky 175 lber and very much a solid tune up / stay busy fight going into the biggest fight in boxing. he's much more proven than the last kid ward fought, and he's not a blown up / retired guy, the way smith was. better fight than brand by a long shot. he's quite durable, and will be a puzzle that kovalev has to figure out, and it will likely take hiim several rounds to do it. that's EXACTLY what he needs. like barrera for ward, this is a very solid choice for an opponent who serves a purpose as a place setter.

whats with the strawmans, anywyaa? nobody is trying to make this fight into something it isn't/ this is a table setter for the most important fight in boxing, ward - kovalev.

so in what regard is this a "poor decision?" becus you don't like kovalev? i see no compelling arguments at all, and a lot of complaining.

Chilemba is good fighter with good reflexes. Just does not carry a lot of power, which is probably why he's a big underdog. He'll do a decent job as preparation for Ward.

But Brand does nothing for Ward. He's undersized and 39 years old. In no way shape or form does Brand prepare you for Kovalev.
