Hard to know what really goes on behind the scenes but I think you're right. Ward would have probably been able to influence HBO to make the GGG fight had he not wasted almost three years of his career due to promotional issues and injury.

Although the opportunity for a GGG fight has passed, Ward is still really lucky. Roc Nation pretty much saved his career and he still has a chance for P4P supremacy by facing Kov. Not many fighters get a second chance like that......
