Comments Thread For: Sergey Kovalev Prepared For Homecoming Versus Chilemba

The hardest part of most of Sergey Kovalev's career has been the ability to get a willing opponent to share ring space. It's become more commonplace during his ascension to the top of the light heavyweight division, where he presently resides with three major belts in tow.

With that, Monday's showdown versus Isaac Chilemba in Ekaterinburg, Russia presents a different kind of challenge. It's not just because the fight marks Kovalev's first in his birth country in more than four years, as well as the first time he defends any of his belts at home.

If Chilemba comes 2 fight he won't last long he must box 2 survive, intelligently, however, either way I can't see the fight making around 8 or 9. still a good matchup..

Chilemba is not a brawler hes a pure boxer so he wont "come to fight" per say he will try to maintain distance and score points on Kovalev but this is going to be hard in Russia. Chilemba is a good boxer I remember when he took Maxim Vlasovs 0 on ESPN a few years back when they were hyping him up, he also should have won the first Bellew fight as well as the Alvarez fight. I think he is coming to win and he has to box perfectly to have a chance, I still think Kovalev takes it based on his raw power as well as his own boxing ability, but I dont think it will be a blow out I think Chilemba will look good in spots and probably just succumb to Kovalevs pressure in the later rounds.

If fans dismiss Kovalev as just a puncher, they simply haven't paid close enough attention to his fights. And I so far haven't seen a Chilemba fight where he looked like a master boxer, or not getting hit at all. He gets caught at least a few times per round, and Sergey is a murderous body puncher anyway. An upset would be huge news, but there's no scenario where that happens. It will be a good workout for Kovalev, with the right fighter to prepare him a bit more for Ward.
