    Usurping P4P no.1...

    ...without retirements or losses.

So basically, how many fighters have gone to p4p no. 1 on merit of their own performances and wins, without the p4p no. 1 fighter having lost or retired at that point?

I can think of Mosley in 2000 (think it was) with his rise from lightweight to welter. Jones had previously been no. 1, he hadn't lost (since 1997) or retired.

Hopkins also got to no. 1 following his win over Tito but Mosley had had a poor run by then if I'm not mistaken.

    Anyone else?

    Roy did it to pernell..

Chavez or tyson or curry (depending on what list you looked at back then) took it from Hagler in 85/86/87

I do recall Oscar briefly holding the p4p crown after Jones was DQ'ed against Griffin but it was quite silly. And rather than admit their mistake, they kept him there even after Jones obliterated Griffin in the rematch.

He and Tito were #1 depending on which magazine you were reading.

Yeah I remember thinking how dumb it was. He got the DQ and Oscar got a VERY controversial win over an old Pea...so of course it makes sense to switch them? Didn't agree but it looked even worse when Jones destroyed Griffin in the rematch. It was like the Ring couldn't admit their mistake.

Yeah, he was consensus p4p no. 1 in the Ring and a few other publications.

I don't there was ever a consensus of anyone being better than Hagler.

Mayweather went no. 1 following Hopkins losses (believe he had back to back losses).

                Who did Tyson go over?

Don't believe Tito was ever consensus number one in the age of Roy, Oscar and Mosley.

Yes, Tito was considered #1 by many pundits and magazines.

Regarding Mayweather -- it was the combination of Mayweather's domination over Gatti (for what it's worth) and Hopkins' controversial loss.

The Gatti win isn't serious, the man was shot by then. Mayweather wouldn't have been no. 1 if Hopkins had not lost. It's different to Mosley or Hopkins gaining that spot or as someone mentioned previously, guys like Chavez or Whitaker in the late 80s, early 90s although I haven't looked that up much.

Which magazines had Tito number one over Jones in the mid to late 90s? And above Oscar, Mosley and Hopkins after that?
