Found this to be a bit crass, the situation was more severe than simply "battered into a retirement", he was in a coma for a week after the fight and is lucky to be making a healthy recovery. This article understates it and makes it sound like he's a 42 year old who just caught a bad knockout and decided to call it a day.


Anyway, I struggle to see that the fight is as close to happening as Hearn suggests by comment like "I hope the Eubank's really want it", that's a bit worrying really as it looks like a blatant attempt to goad them into the fight, I'd hoped the negotiations were past that point.

Gotta give Eubank a ton of credit here. He wasn't forced into this fight, there wasn't a ton of pressure; he just simply wanted to fight the best in the division. I wonder how much of it is because his father is delusional. Whatever the reasons, credit is due here. I agree. Pretty tasteless.

This is a win/win for Eubank. Even if he loses, he'll likely stretch Golovkin a few rounds (seems to have a rock solid chin like his father) and emerge with a ton of credit, after which he can fight one of the other top dogs - Lemieux, Canelo, Cotto, Saunders, Jacobs et al. Even by taking this fight, he scores a massive PR victory over Saunders, whose career seems to have badly stalled by comparison.

I think the writer was figuring that most who follow boxing likely knew about that, and it's a whole other topic. It also does come down to he was beaten into retirement... not trying to take away from the severity of the situation at that time of course.
