Billy Joe Saunders on the Undercard of Canelo-Smith, will fight winner?

WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders is being lined up to face Canelo Alvarez, if the Mexican star gets past Liam Smith on September 17.

After a mooted fight with Gennady Golovkin evaporated, Saunders should box on the Canelo-Smith undercard in Las Vegas and will then target the victor in the main event.

Promoter Frank Warren told Boxing News magazine this week, “It was close [fighting Gennady Golovkin] but then the summer thing was out because of Bill being injured. After that it became a little bit difficult with the finances of it.

“But Bill will be on the undercard in Las Vegas with a view to fight the winner of Smith-Alvarez. We haven’t sorted an opponent out yet but that’s where we’re at, that’s what we’re putting together.”

Canelo stood down from potentially fighting Gennady Golovkin himself and vacated his WBC middleweight title, which has passed to “GGG”. Canelo though has been operating at a catchweight of only 155lbs, just one pound above super-welterweight, the division where Liam Smith holds the WBO title. After that fight Canelo could bounce back to middleweight, box Billy Joe Saunders and, perhaps, in the long run get on course for a unification battle with Gennady Golovkin.

Well that'll help people who are mad at Canelo. BJS has a tough time making 160, so Canelo would be moving up to 160 for that fight. I wanted a BJS/GGG fight, but couldn't really see BJS doing much against GGG anyways. Tough fight for Canelo though, Bill I would argue is the favorite.

Calling it now, BJS and Eubank beat Canelo & GGG setting up the biggest fight of the universe.

I've been very critical of Canelo about this whole GGG situation, but I have to say that Canelo-BJS is a very solid fight and it would be for a title. Very risky for Canelo, I might favor Saunders in that one as well.

makes sense. would've thought GBP would prefer canelo-lemieux for his first fight at 160, but maybe warren forced their hand. it's a good look for the UK to be getting all these big fights anyway

I think Billy Joe has a great shot at beating canelo. But Eubank jr over GGG? dont see that happening. If BJS and eubank DO both win, that would be a massive fight between the two of them

Question is, who does GB have BJS fight? T.Johnson, Stevens, Lemieux, Quigely (lol)?

Yeah, i thought it might be lemeuix as well. But Bjs is a better fight and bigger challenge for canelo.

This plan from GBP is not a bad one.
