Porter vs. Thurman great but not THAT great
By Ted Sares
“I want to thank Shawn Porter for a tremendous fight,” Thurman
“We worked hard and Keith is a great champion,” Porter
“Boxing needed a night like tonight,” DiBella
Mauro Ranallo needs to rein it in. Lots of Arreola-type bull rushes, neat left hook counters, few flush connections, and crowd noise every time there is a sloppy move by a one-dimensional Porter does not equal a contender for "FOTY." Francisco Vargas vs. Orlando Salido is a FOTY candidate. This was NOT that type of fight. When Salido and Vargas went toe-to-toe in a back and forth war on June 4, the pulsating action was getting close to the point where someone might have to be saved from himself.
Mauro, who makes many cringe as he goes into high gear and high decibel count as soon as he opens his mouth, also said "Thurman treating porter like an internet troll"? One of the strangest things I have ever heard a commentator say about a pair of boxers. Maybe it’s his MMA background, but his lack of boxing knowledge is egregious.
The fight was timely, well-matched, well-fought, and drew 2.12 million viewers, beating out major-league baseball on FOX, which drew 2.02 viewers. Moreover, two world class fighters jumped at the opportunity to fight their equal, and then they proceeded deliver beyond anyone's expectation. Yes, that was superb and great for boxing.
But again, this was not Vargas vs. Salido where two warriors took it to the brink. This was not The Fight of the Year.Comment

I looked forward for Salido v Vargas more and it exceeded my high expectations but Thurman Porter quickly became more exciting because it constantly felt like one might finish the other at any moment. It also had more variety in terms of action and was more entertaining in that regard.
That shouldn't take anything away from the incredible fight Salido Vargas was.Comment

Saildo & Vargas for me by a mile. Porter/Thurman was a good match up for the most part but it had quite a few moments of inactivity and taking rounds off. It was no Pacquiao-Marquez IV in terms of drama, interesting style match-up, and finish. Despite there being no knockdowns in either fight, to me Salido and Vargas felt like at any moment someone could've went down. Neither were willing to concede any ground, showed very good inside skills, and had the crowd behind both of them all the way. Not talking down on anyone but it seemed like Vargas/Salido had that win at all cost mindset similar to Pacquiao/Marquez, where as in the other fight Porter and Thurman in particular didn't seem to have that same drive.Comment

everyone knows I am not bias and I dont play that race or nationality shit, I just call it how it is.
Salido vs Vargas was a fight in its own league with 2 very skilled fighters combating each other hence the ebb and flow of the fight was great and every round was excitement whereas thurman vs porter you got lulled into boredom and repeativieness by the 5th round Thurman vs Porter looked like a street fights with gloves on, one guy is hoping to land one big punch and when he doesnt he turns his back and run and the other guy thinks its a wrestling match, both just throwing haymakers hoping they land and when they did they didnt know what else to do.
so in conclusion
Vargas vs Salido was 2 elite class professionals fighting for pride and glory.
Porter vs Thurman was ******ness at its finest
