Roy Jones jr certainly had the athleticism to make the shoulder roll work for him, why didn't he use it? Was he just so athletic in his prime that the shoulder roll wouldn't offer him any additional defensive advantages (i.e. his reflexes to narrowly dodge punches without relying on a shell (like floyd) were good enough)?
Why didn't RJJ utilize the shoulder roll technique?

The shoulder roll is a stylistic preference. Maybe it wasn't a style he liked or maybe he never had a trainer who knew how to teach it.
It's like asking why RJJ never used the peekaboo. -
Not everybody should or could utilize that defensive stance/style, especially if they didn't come up using it. Prime Roy didn't need to follow any textbook style, he was so athletically gifted he could break all the "rules" and still dominate. It worked for him and funny we saw how easily he beat one of the masters of that style, James Toney.Comment
