Comments Thread For: Lomachenko: Walters Isn't Scared; Just Wants A Lot More Money

By Keith Idec - NEW YORK Vasyl Lomachenko doesn't think Nicholas Walters is afraid of him. He's not sure whether Walters will fight him later this year, either. The Ukrainian southpaw wants to fight Walters next, assuming the heavily favored Lomachenko (5-1, 3 KOs) beats WBO world super featherweight champion Rocky Martinez (29-2-3, 17 KOs) in their HBO "Boxing After Dark" main event Saturday night in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Whether Walters can be satisfied financially, however, is another matter altogether.

Hm. It's clear boxers DKSAB, and I can't say we should believe Lomachenko. I think he's trying to be respectful and humble so that he doesn't scare the Axe Man away further, by basically making him feel like he has a chance (he doesn't).

Lomachenko comes from the Ukrainian School of Psychology (USoP), and I think what he's doing is brilliant: mind games and reverse psychology.

Bravo Lomachenko, do anything you can to make him stop being scared and want to fight you

It'd be a risky fight for Walters . Can't blame him for trying to get his $ . He is the bigger draw .

Walters should just suck it up and take the fight, but he should've requested a tune-up fight on this undercard to help sell their fight (and earn some extra cash). He's coming off a draw with a journeyman and has been really inactive the last two years. He's lost all his buzz from the Donaire win.

For some perspective. Lomanchenko made $750,000 to fight Koasicha on the Tim Bradley-Brandon Rios undercard. They offered Walters $550,000 to fight Lomachenko in a main event. The $550,000 would have been his highest purse. Walters has the better resume and has headlined his own shows and is a bigger draw than Lomachenko. Lomachenko gets $200,000 more to fight a bum on an undercard, that didn't sell well, than what would've been Walters highest payday. Lomachenko isn't worried because he's getting great paydays.

Because Lomo signed a big-*ss contract when he turned pro. Walters didn't.

If the Axe-Man wants to make more money, he needs to keep knocking top guys off. You can't just beat Donaire and expect to be set, ask Rigo about that.

Exactly spot on. This is why so many have left Arum in the past, he is way too biased with his fighters. Objectivly speaking if these two fighters were with a different promoter who valued them equally and judged them based on marketability and history there is no question that Walters would get a much better split probably around 70-30, or 60-40 at best. HBO is cheap as well, showtime or haymon would put up about 2 kill for this fight rather than just over a mill, so Walters is correct in waiting for the right pay, because at that rate he should receive about 1.2 mill and Lomo 800K. Lomo has already been over paid for few fights and a boring style, while Riggo is similar and got penuts, once again bias of bob. Now Walters is a KO artist entertaining in and outside of the ring and they still don't want to pay him. He even dismantled a huge name in Doniare and bigger names than Lomo has even attempted to fight. Boxing politics messes up the sport most of the time.
