Comments Thread For: Taylor Says Critics Will Be Shocked When Pros Struggle in Olympics
Olympic champion Katie Taylor has warned professionals to expect a few eye-openers if they take up the contentious option to fight at this summer's Rio Olympics.
I agree. I think people are underestimating how fast the pace is for amateur fights vs the pace most pros are accustomed to with where they are now. I think amateurs have more knowledge with what amateur judges are or aren't looking for. I think there are many things like that that'll give edges to many amateurs in a fight with a pro.
Plus the even more notable thing is lets not forget this seems to be a more interesting era with amateurs in that I don't recall a time when there have been so many extremely high level prospects & contenders who've had long & successful amateur careers who've turned pro & now have 12 or less fights & are threats to anyone out there. There are surely some cats still like that fighting as amateurs right now that few know the name of today.
I think any pros in the Olympics this year could have a rude awakening.
All that said I still feel like amateurs in the Olympics is a dying thing so get used to watching the World Championships to watch the best fight the best in the amateurs & get used to seeing pros in the Olympics & being more like a hybrid, high level side event for professionals kinda like a more respectable BKB every 4 years.
Anyone from the Cuban team (except the HW) would take any pro to school badly in 3-5 rounds, ala Hurtado-Pernell.
Last week in the WSB finals La Cruz put such a show the commentator (an American) said he didnt think Ward would beat him in a 3-5 round fight.
By the way, Cuba beat the UK 9-1.

"And some of the comments over the last few weeks and months have been very insulting to amateur boxers and I think it will be an eye-opener for a lot of people."
and when a 30+ old champion faces an 18 year old kid and put him into coma, I wouldnt be surprised too
THIS.
Loving boxing is difficult enough with the brutality of watching situations like Nick Blackwell and Gerald McClellan, but watching some 18 year old poor kid from like Cuba get brain damaged by a 32 year old millionaire, with years of experience over him, is just too much for me.
