  • Comments Thread For: Measured Against All Time: Muhammad Ali In Memoriam

By Cliff Rold - He was a fighter. It's easy sometimes to lose sight of that. Muhammad Ali was and has become so many things to so many over the years. Symbol, icon, hero, villain, and often a reflection for his generation; Ali was always a fighter first.

    Great article.

A poster in another forum who keeps track of these things said that Ali faced over 30 ring magazine top 10 ranked HW's over his career. Which is astonishing really. Sometimes we get so caught up reeling off the great fighters he fought, that we forget just how many solid world rated foes he took on and beat.

Only Joe Louis comes close, and the quality of top10 opp that he faced were markedly worse (as pointed out in the article).

Ali, the Greatest HW who ever lived. I hope his memory can inspire some more current boxers to take risks and shoot for greatness.

    RIP.

So many points can be made. I'll just pick two. Fought everyone, ducked no one and the Heavyweight champ is the best of the best nevermind the pound for pound mirage.

He fought and beat damn near every fighter that mattered at heavyweight over 20 years. Two decades of heavyweights lost to Ali. How many fighters in any division that can claim to have done that? It's freaking crazy. That's without even getting into the fact that it was the best 2 decades in heavyweight history.

No question for me that he's the greatest heavyweight ever.

Almost solid article. Big mistake in perpetuating the myth of the extended rest period in the first Cooper fight. This was laid to rest by historians years ago. At most a 4 - 5 seconds extension between the 4th and 5th rounds. The glove was not replaced and Ali duly finished him in the appointed round. Watch the film, you can see padding flying out of Ali's glove as he pummels Cooper. Just an Angelo Dundee embellishment!

Been looking at past videos of Ali where he avoided a fight because the pay wasn't good enough. Nothing has been written about his finances before and after retirement.

I guess that's what makes natural fighters distinct from others.

Good article but it bugs me out when people get the basics wrong. The writer lists Ali's record as being 59-5-0 when his record was 56-5-0. These guys need to do a better job with proof reading.
