If he's serious about preparing himself for Kovalev, then he and his promoter should bear the cost of that preparation, not HBO. That's the way it works for everybody else in the business, why should Ward be any different?

It's not like Ward/Kovalev, if it happened this year, would be a PPV blockbuster and earn HBO a fortune. Outside of hardcore boxing fans, nobody knows or cares about Ward and Kovalev. That's sad, but it's true.

I think what we are seeing now is Ward preparing his escape route from annihilation by Krusher. "They won't pay me what I'm worth. Why should I fight for peanuts?"

Shabranskyy or Cleverly against Ward would both be 50/50 fights, btw.
Exactly true. This fight has Calzaghe - Kessler written all over it......

Calzaghe/Kessler had over 50,000 people in attendance. Ward/Kovalev will be labeled a success if it gets 10,000.

No idea; Barrera got $450k for the fight, and I doubt that the budget for Ward's fight got cut all that much. With Shabranskyy being the only 175 on Golden Boy's roster worth looking at, I have no doubt that Oscar's probably asking for more than what even Barrera got.

Ward, for all intents and purposes, simply needs another fight camp to sharpen up even more; Shabranskyy gives Ward a good look, but Ward would benefit by simply fighting a righthander.

I meant it strictly from a ratings perspective. HBO does not get any of the live gate lol

Him and Kovalev beating bums out of the top 20 doesn't do anything for the PPV fight at all.
