Don't forget, undefeated Pavlik was too scary for Joe Calzaghe to fight. Everyone wanted this fight to happen, Pavlik was onboard, HBO onboard, Top Rank onboard even Calzaghe said he would fight him next when the press kept asking him if he would face Kelly. I liked him -- he was a skinny tall guy with a very long reach for a middleweight.
He didn't fight Paul Williams, and he was schooled by Sergio Martinez and Bernard Hopkins.

He would have mollywhopped Paul Williams. It would have been brutal... Looked something like Miranda/Pavlik, but Williams had a frailer frame, and chin, and would have been knocked out cold along the ropes covering up.

Did you even watch the Martinez/Pavlik fight? That fight was dead even, or Pavlik was up a round or two, until he got cut, and Martinez took the last 3-4 rounds. Pavlov was timing him, and put him on his arse.

Not to mention he was fresh out of rehab (LITERALLY!) going into the training camp...


Hopkins is the only fight he was truly schooled in. Hopkins boxed a masterpiece, and truly revived his career. But it's Hopkins - no shame in that.

I did watch that fight live.
I was rooting for Pavlik and I didn't know Martinez, who was like a revelation to me at that time.
(I didn't know that Pavlik was coming right from rehab and I don't care much, tbh -- he knew that boxing was his job.)

i wouldn't doubt that being the case, and i'd have to go through the timeline to figure out what happened to stop the fight. calzaghe spent a lot of time in europe, and the money wasn't as good then as it is now, so i don't blame him for looking at bigger money fights. although pavlik was a genuine star at the time, so maybe the idea was to take easier fights.

and we both know calzaghe and hopkins avoied chad dawson for a long time.


that said, pavlik would have been lost at sea against calzaghe if he didn't get old over night. think sergio without a disadvantage in size. watched kessler vs calzaghe recently - that guy could f#cking fight.

Calzaghe was a LHW at that point. Pavlik a MW. That would have meant some serious weight discussions.
